Payments help Manitoba businesses reduce refrigeration energy use with approved upgrades to display cases and walk-in coolers or freezers.

You can receive a payment after installing approved refrigeration upgrades and providing completion evidence. Examples include night covers that keep warm air out of open display cases, strip curtains for walk-in entrances, automatic door closers and replacement door gaskets that seal worn door edges.
Payments depend on the measure, quantity and, for some measures, location. In Winnipeg, the listed incentive is CAD 3 per square foot of eligible walk-in strip curtain and CAD 50 per eligible automatic door closer. Efficiency Manitoba may limit payment to the extra product cost of the energy-saving upgrade over the standard alternative. Estimates are finalized after the project and its documentation are reviewed.
If you breach the agreement, including by ceasing to hold the building’s Manitoba Hydro account, Efficiency Manitoba can cancel unpaid incentives after notice. If you were already in breach when an incentive was paid, you must repay that incentive.
Eligibility
- You must be the building owner or a designated representative, such as a property manager, and a Manitoba Hydro account holder eligible for its commercial general-service electricity and commercial natural-gas rates. The building must be heated primarily by electricity or natural gas supplied by Manitoba Hydro.
- You must use the equipment in commercial, industrial or agricultural operations and be its end user, not a refrigeration vendor, manufacturer or installer. Equipment must be new, approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) where applicable, or independently certified to meet CSA safety standards.
- The retrofit measures described here require programme approval before equipment is bought or work starts. Disclose assistance from other federal, provincial, Manitoba Hydro or Efficiency Manitoba energy-conservation programmes; it may make the same equipment ineligible unless Efficiency Manitoba agrees otherwise in writing.
- Walk-in strip curtains and automatic closers must be for eligible units below −18°C, or between −17°C and 7°C, the programme’s low- and medium-temperature categories. A closer must firmly shut the main insulated door from within one inch of closure; new doors with a standard self-closing mechanism do not qualify. Replacement gaskets must match the manufacturer’s specifications. Display-case night covers require the manufacturer to have no objection to their use.
- Install and operate the equipment within 12 months of approval and keep it in place for at least 36 months after installation. Allow programme inspections from application until 36 months after installation and obtain required permits and approvals.

Complete the Commercial Refrigeration Program application and its incentive worksheet, then upload it through the official Apply Now page. Include the relevant equipment specifications. Efficiency Manitoba reviews eligibility and emails its pre-approval decision before you purchase or begin the upgrades described here.
After installation, email the completion declaration, itemized invoices and any applicable Certificate of Approval to Refrigeration@EfficiencyMB.ca. Efficiency Manitoba checks the completed project and documents before paying the incentive.
