Natural flood management grant
Grants help organisations, landowners and land managers create wetlands, restore floodplains and install other natural measures that reduce downstream flood risk in Gloucestershire.
Tato příležitost je nyní dostupná v angličtině.
The Gloucestershire Natural Flood Management Partnership supports physical works that slow or store water while benefiting nature. Examples include wetland creation, reconnecting rivers to floodplains, planting hedges across slopes, rain gardens and removing hard surfaces.
Funding covers capital works and directly associated materials, labour, equipment hire, monitoring and project management. The scheme targets projects worth £1,000–£15,000. Larger projects up to £25,000 may be considered where they deliver significant flood-risk reduction or habitat creation. Projects over £15,000 also need to present their proposals to a Grant Assessment Panel.
Eligibility
- Any organisation, landowner or land manager can propose a Gloucestershire project. Explain how the measures will reduce flood risk downstream and help nature recover, and describe any additional benefits for local people, such as volunteering or education.
- Provide written landowner approval. Projects that have not yet secured approval are less likely to be funded.
- Explain who will carry out the works and how you will ensure good design and delivery, for example through experienced contractors, supervision or design review. The Partnership encourages designs that follow its principles and the Working with Natural Processes Framework.
- Identify necessary consents and whether they are in place. Work in an ordinary watercourse requires Land Drainage Consent; tree felling may need a Felling Licence. Check for protected species or habitats, and historic features if undertaking earthworks.
- Itemise project costs, explain value for money, describe how you will monitor outcomes and design the measures to reduce or eliminate ongoing maintenance.
- Match funding and delivery with partners are welcome but are not essential. Connections to local nature-recovery strategies are also welcome rather than required.
The scheme excludes dredging, desilting and ditch clearance, and projects that cannot show how they may reduce downstream flood risk. It cannot fund work unconnected to capital delivery, such as standalone feasibility studies, research or staff salaries. It also cannot pay ongoing compensation for income forgone on land used for the project.

- Funding is allocated to the first projects that meet the criteria until the budget is spent; closure will be announced publicly.
Before applying, the council strongly encourages you to discuss your project with Pete Belk, Natural Flood Management Partnership Officer, at Pete.Belk@gloucestershire.gov.uk. Draft your answers in the application form and guidance document, then register on the council’s online grant portal and copy your answers into the online application to submit it.
The officer screens applications before the Partnership Steering Group scores them and communicates the outcome. Allow six weeks for assessment. There is no formal deadline: funding goes to the first projects that meet the criteria until the available budget is spent, and the Partnership will announce closure publicly.
