Solar Rebate for year-round homes
Manitoba homeowners can receive CAD 0.50 per installed watt of new solar photovoltaic capacity, up to CAD 5,000 per home, for an eligible grid-connected system serving their or their tenant’s primary residence.

Efficiency Manitoba pays this rebate for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, which turn sunlight into electricity. The programme supports a new installation on an existing home, not a replacement or expansion of an existing solar system. Rooftop and ground-mounted systems are described in the programme guide.
The calculation uses direct-current (DC) watts—the panels’ generating capacity before an inverter converts the electricity for home use. CAD 0.50 per watt equals CAD 500 per kilowatt. Funding stops at 10 kW and CAD 5,000 per home; a larger system can qualify, but capacity above 10 kW earns no additional rebate. The payment cannot exceed the solar products’ cost paid by you, including taxes.
Your system stays connected to Manitoba Hydro’s grid and primary residential meter. A bi-directional meter records electricity flowing both to and from your home. Excess electricity may be sold to Manitoba Hydro under its net-billing arrangements; for generators below 100 kW, Hydro applies its separately published excess-energy price, which changes over time and differs from the retail electricity rate. The solar rebate does not require you to give up this export-payment route.
Eligibility
You must own the home, hold its active Manitoba Hydro account, and be eligible for Hydro’s household electricity and natural-gas tariffs. It must be your or your tenant’s primary residence, occupied and heated year-round. Seasonal homes, vacation rentals, unoccupied homes and unheated buildings are excluded.
The terms cover detached and semi-detached homes on their original foundations, and mobile or modular homes on permanent foundations with a permanent water supply. Separately metered duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes can qualify when they meet the other requirements. Condominiums and other multi-residential buildings are excluded by the terms; the separately metered two-to-four-unit exception remains.
This is a renovation rebate. The system must be installed and operating on or after 1 April 2022. Only one application per solar project per residence is accepted, and the system must not replace or add to existing solar. Buy the new panels and associated equipment in Canada through an Efficiency Manitoba registered contractor or retailer, and own them yourself.
Use an Efficiency Manitoba registered contractor holding an electrical contractor’s licence. The designer or engineer must have the qualifications required by the relevant permitting authorities. Equipment must meet Canadian Standards Association electrical-safety requirements or be certified to those standards by an accredited independent organization. The project must comply with the Manitoba Electrical Code, applicable bylaws, permits and inspections, connect to the home’s primary residential meter and Manitoba Hydro’s grid, and have a bi-directional meter.
Disclose any assistance already received from another federal, provincial, Manitoba Hydro or Efficiency Manitoba energy-conservation programme. Such assistance may make the products ineligible unless Efficiency Manitoba agrees otherwise in writing. Keep the equipment in place as installed for at least 36 months after installation, and notify Efficiency Manitoba in writing of ownership or project changes affecting the application. Losing the required account-holder status can cancel an unpaid rebate or require repayment under the terms.

Choose a registered contractor through the official offer’s supplier link. The contractor obtains the required permits and submits the interconnection documents to Manitoba Hydro. Obtain Hydro’s interconnection approval and the required permits before buying the equipment or starting installation. Efficiency Manitoba does not require advance rebate approval; Hydro’s grid approval is a separate requirement.
After the installation passes final inspection, has its bi-directional meter, is operating and is fully paid for, your contractor submits the rebate claim. Efficiency Manitoba must receive the complete application and supporting paid invoices and receipts within 90 days after project completion. Documents must identify the contractor, homeowner and site, installation and invoice dates, proof of payment, and itemized equipment, labour, other costs and taxes.
Keep the supporting paperwork for 24 months from approval. Efficiency Manitoba may verify the installed system for up to 12 months after installation and receipt of all final paperwork; make the home and equipment accessible and attend any verification. Approved rebates are paid by mailed cheque. The amount is finalized after review and is not confirmed until payment; programme changes or termination can affect applications already in progress.
