Joint projects for climate-neutral cities
Grants for municipalities and researchers to develop shared ways of speeding up the climate transition in Swedish cities.
Tato příležitost je nyní dostupná v angličtině.
The 2026 call, Gemensam acceleration mot Klimatneutrala städer 2030, offered grants for joint work under Viable Cities. Projects could develop shared approaches to climate calculations or public procurement, with results useful beyond the participating municipalities.
The grant was SEK 1.5–2.5 million per project and covered at most 50% of the whole project’s eligible costs. Individual partners had different ceilings: activities outside the market, such as non-commercial university research, could receive up to 100% of that partner’s eligible costs. For companies, research to develop new or substantially improved products, processes or services, and feasibility studies, had ceilings of 70%, 60% and 50% for small, medium-sized and large companies respectively. Development and testing using existing knowledge had ceilings of 45%, 35% and 25%. Company size and the activity classification follow the rules in the full call. The 50% whole-project ceiling still applied.
The coordinator receives the grant and passes it on to the other funded partners. Unused funds must be repaid; funding can also be recovered if the grant conditions are breached.
Eligibility
These conditions applied to the 2026 round.
- At least three partners: two municipalities and one university, higher education institution or research institute. Companies, other public bodies and civil-society organisations could join. Individuals and sole traders could not apply.
- At least one participating city must have signed Klimatkontrakt 2030 or a declaration of intent and included the relevant shared commitment. Klimatkontrakt 2030 is a city’s politically approved document setting climate goals, actions and investment priorities with other organisations.
- Partners with their own project budget must operate in Sweden. International partners also need a Swedish organisation number; without these conditions, they can only contribute co-financing.
- The project must support the climate transition in Swedish cities and offer results that other cities can use. The coordinator and partners must take part in joint work with Viable Cities and budget at least SEK 100,000, including co-financing, for that participation.
- Consider gender equality and diversity in the team, project leadership, work and intended results.
- Companies must cover remaining costs themselves or with private cash financing. Another organisation’s contribution of work that it pays for itself is not an eligible cost of the company. Public support for the same eligible costs must stay within the applicable aid ceilings; disclose other public or EU funding.
- Costs must be recorded and incurred within the approved project period. Projects could start no earlier than 1 August 2026 and must finish by 31 December 2027.

Applications went through the “Finansiering av forskning, innovation och affärsutveckling” service on Mina sidor. The person submitting first needed permission to represent the coordinating organisation. The project description belonged in the form, with CVs of the project leader and other key people limited to one A4 page each. The joint work with Viable Cities had to appear as a separate work package with its budget.
