Custom energy project incentives
Funding for industrial and large commercial energy upgrades, on-site renewable generation and demand reduction, with a district-energy route for shared heating and cooling.
Denne finansieringsmulighed er i øjeblikket beskrevet på engelsk.
You can fund equipment upgrades, new plant design and facility expansions that save energy. Efficient electrification supports advanced technologies that replace fossil-fuel equipment while improving efficiency and reducing overall grid demand. Demand-response projects reduce or shift electricity use during BC Hydro's specified peak-demand periods.
The load-displacement route funds customer-owned renewable generation equipment that offsets electricity used at your facility.
Funding is calculated from your project's energy-saving potential, up to 100% of capital costs. For energy efficiency, efficient electrification and load displacement, the calculation uses annual energy savings over up to ten years converted into a present value and a rate of 2–5 Canadian cents per kWh for distribution customers or 4.5 cents for transmission customers. Demand response receives CAD 50–75 per kW of demand reduced, depending on the project or programme participation. Eligible costs include design, equipment, installation, disposal of old equipment and tax.
District energy connects buildings to a shared network that supplies heating and cooling from a central source. Capital funding can support connections to a low-carbon network, upgrades or expansion of an existing plant, and new developments with centralized heating and cooling. Its funding is assessed against the electricity that equivalent individual-building heating and cooling would require, up to 100% of capital costs.
The temporary bonus adds 30% to the incentive for projects submitted from 3 June 2025 to 11 February 2027 and completed by 14 March 2028.
Eligibility
For the standard custom-project route:
- Industrial customers must be on BC Hydro's small, medium or large general-service distribution rate, or its transmission rate. Large commercial customers must be on those distribution rates and use at least 2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually across the company.
- Energy-efficiency projects, including efficient electrification and load displacement, must save at least 25,000 kWh annually. Demand-response projects must reduce demand by at least 25 kW.
- Your site must have operated for at least six months before applying, be a new facility, or have a planned expansion that increases site energy use by more than 10%.
On-site renewable-generation projects must also have more than 100 kW of alternating-current (AC) generation capacity. All generated electricity must be used at your site; it cannot flow back to the grid.
The district-energy branch identifies municipalities, site developers, industrial sites and district-energy operators as potential recipients. BC Hydro assesses the project's energy and demand-saving potential.

Contact your BC Hydro Key Account Manager or Regional Energy Manager, who submits the application. If you do not know your contact, call the business help desk on 1 866 522 4713.
Prepare the project information through a feasibility study, or obtain BC Hydro's technical-requirements document for your engineer or consultant to complete. BC Hydro conducts an engineering and financial review, calculates the incentive and sends an agreement stating the amount and conditions for signature. The next step is to purchase and install the equipment with your contractors. After installation, submit paid invoices and the completion documents specified in the agreement; BC Hydro reviews them before paying. The agreement can also require measurement and verification of the completed project's performance.
For on-site generation, first complete an interconnection study to determine the requirements for connecting your generation equipment. Start it through a load-displacement application for distribution customers with incoming connections below 35 kV, or an interconnection request for transmission customers with connections above 35 kV. Work with an Alliance of Energy Professionals expert, and obtain the technical requirements from your Key Account Manager before applying.
For district energy, discuss scope and eligibility with your Key Account Manager or an Alliance expert. The branch provides a feasibility-study route followed by capital funding, while projects that are ready may proceed directly to incentive funding.
