IAM climate investment
Equity investment for European startups developing solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or adapt to climate change, at early stages of company development.

IAM (Innovation for Adaptation and Mitigation) invests in young climate companies. Demea Sustainable Investment provides capital through the fund and becomes a part-owner of the company.
The fund supports innovations in energy, agriculture and sustainable mobility. Its focus includes managing climate risks, restoring ecosystems, managing water, capturing and storing carbon, improving energy efficiency, developing new agricultural practices and making energy storage and networks more flexible.
For example, IAM financed checkDPE, a digital platform supporting home energy renovation. The investment supported its rollout to consumers, entry into the business market, team expansion and development of new features.
Eligibility
IAM targets European startups at seed or Series A stages: young companies in the early phases of developing and bringing their innovations to market. Their solutions must fit the fund’s climate mitigation or adaptation focus.
For new initial investments from 1 December 2024, Demea’s exclusion policy rules out:
- Companies earning more than 5% of revenue from fossil-fuel exploration, production or exploitation.
- Distribution, transport, equipment and service companies earning more than 33% of revenue from customers in fossil-fuel exploration, production or exploitation.
- Any direct or indirect exposure to thermal coal, without those percentage allowances.
For both revenue tests, revenue associated with natural gas treated as a transitional energy source under the EU Taxonomy is left out of the calculation. This exception concerns qualifying natural gas; it does not remove the thermal-coal exclusion.
