Rockstart Energy backs early-stage businesses that help the energy transition, including renewable generation, storage, smart grids, efficiency and mobility. Its European investment focus also covers building energy management, industrial energy applications and clean transport.
Initial financing uses an investment instrument that can convert into company ownership. Rockstart’s role is ultimately that of a minority shareholder. Alongside the investment, the Startup Support Package provides tailored mentoring, expertise and market connections for 6–12 months, and costs €65,000.
Rockstart can make further investments alongside a lead investor—the investor taking a leading role in organising the funding round. Its FAQ describes investment of up to 50% of the next round and total investment capacity of up to €2 million through Series B, a later stage of expanding an established startup. Follow-on funding is selective: Energy Fund II assesses business performance, growth, financial efficiency and sustainability before backing its strongest portfolio companies.
For Energy Fund II, the planned initial investment averages €200,000. This is a fund strategy average, not a fixed amount promised to each startup. Its later investment averages range from €300,000 at seed stage to €1 million at Series B.
Eligibility
You should have a running startup showing traction: at least one or more pilots, and ideally customers or users. Rockstart primarily looks for a minimum viable product—a usable early version of the product that can be tested with customers. It considers the team’s skills, experience, motivation and distinctive execution, together with a clear positive-impact mission.
An existing team with complementary skills is preferred, but solo founders can discuss plans to build a team. Companies that have already raised funding or moved beyond the earliest stage may also apply. An idea-stage founder can make contact to discuss progress and future readiness; that invitation does not mean an undeveloped idea is ready for investment. Selected founders do not have to relocate to receive support.
The programme uses environmental, social and governance screening. Energy Fund II reviews performance before follow-on investment and at least annually, while recognising that very early companies may not yet have all emissions data or policies in place.
Its exclusions are based on the IFC list and agreed investor requirements. The base list covers illegal activities, weapons, tobacco, gambling, production or trade in alcohol other than beer and wine, unbonded asbestos and marine drift nets longer than 2.5 km. The alcohol exclusion does not cover beer or wine; the weapons, alcohol, tobacco and gambling provisions have an exception where the activity is only ancillary to the sponsor’s main operations. The asbestos provision permits bonded cement sheeting with less than 20% asbestos.
