Rain barrel grant
Property owners and tenants in Heemstede can receive €30 or €50 per rain barrel to collect and reuse rainwater.

The grant pays for rain barrels and the fittings needed to connect them. You can install them yourself or use an installer, but installation and delivery costs are excluded.
You receive €30 per barrel, or €50 if its overflow drains into a suitable infiltration area, such as planting, gravel or another permeable surface. The overflow must not reconnect to the sewer. Up to four barrels can be funded per address. The grant cannot exceed the purchase/material costs; if you receive other grants for the same barrels and fittings, combined support cannot exceed 100% of those actual costs.
Eligibility
- You must own a property in Heemstede or rent it with written permission from the landlord. You do not need to be registered as living at that address.
- Each barrel must hold at least 100 litres, stand outdoors and connect directly to a rainpipe demonstrably disconnected from the sewer or rainwater drainage system.
- Only one grant application is allowed per address, covering up to four barrels.
- Buy and connect the barrels during the 2026 scheme period, then apply within three months of purchase and installation and before 1 December 2026.
The municipality may depart from the rules where applying them would cause serious unfairness.

Buy and install the barrels, then apply through Gemeente Heemstede’s online form using DigiD or eHerkenning. Applications by email, letter or other channels are not processed; if you use the wrong channel, the municipality first gives you an opportunity to submit correctly.
Include your address details, a photo before installation, a photo showing the installed barrel and disconnected rainpipe, the receipt or invoice, and details of other subsidies received or expected for buying and installing the barrels. Unclear photos or missing purchase proof can lead to refusal. If your application is incomplete, you will have an opportunity to supply the missing information.
A decision follows within eight weeks after a complete application, with one possible extension of up to four weeks.
