Air sealing rebate
Rebates for homeowners and landlords in Newfoundland and Labrador who reduce air leaks in electrically heated homes, including new construction and eligible attic-insulation projects.
Αυτή η ευκαιρία είναι προς το παρόν διαθέσιμη στα Αγγλικά.
Seal gaps around your attic, walls, foundation and service openings to reduce heating energy loss. TakeCharge offers three routes.
For an existing home, the rebate is CAD 200–750 per home, based on the measured reduction in air leakage. You need at least a 10% improvement. The published examples are CAD 200 for 10%, CAD 475 for 20% and CAD 750 for 30% or more; amounts between these are prorated.
For a new home, the rebate is CAD 200–750 based on the final tested air leakage rate, reported as ACH50. The home must reach 2.5 ACH50 or less. Published examples are CAD 200 at 2.5 ACH50, CAD 300 at 1.5 ACH50 and CAD 750 at 0.6 ACH50 or less. Both tested routes pay a credit on your electricity bill.
When air sealing is bundled with an eligible attic-insulation upgrade, TakeCharge pays the approved installer CAD 0.50 per square foot of area sealed for eligible air-sealing materials, up to CAD 750 per home. This route is aimed at attic projects where existing insulation must be removed and replaced.
Eligibility
- Your home must be in Newfoundland and Labrador. You must own it and have an active electricity account. Landlords can participate. The home must be on a permanent foundation, intended as a primary residence and have a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) or air exchanger.
- Electric heating must be the primary heat source. For the existing-home and bundled routes, a home that also uses another heating source must use at least 15,000 kWh of electricity annually.
- For the existing-home route, an approved professional must carry out blower-door tests before and after the work. A blower-door test uses a fan in an exterior doorway to lower indoor air pressure and identify leaks. The measured leakage result, ACH50, must improve by at least 10% after sealing.
- For new construction, the home is eligible for up to 12 months after the occupancy permit is issued. It must have the permit when tested. An approved professional must complete the final blower-door test, and you must submit the documented results and a copy of the permit. The final result must be 2.5 ACH50 or less. Eligible measures include caulking, spray foam, foam gaskets and aerosol-applied sealing systems.
- For bundled attic work, the home must have been built and connected to the electricity system before 1 January 2014. A TakeCharge-approved insulation installer must perform the air sealing alongside an eligible attic-insulation upgrade and complete the air-sealing checklist.
- The bundled insulation must be new, CSA-approved and have a verifiable R-value, which measures resistance to heat passing through the material. TakeCharge’s attic guidance calls for R50–55, with R60 required in Labrador. Spray foam must be installed by a participating professional. Keep a qualifying receipt showing the quantity, brand, R-value and square footage. For an attic whose insulation requires replacement or that has no existing insulation, the insulation rebate is calculated from a starting value of R20. Other insulation-programme rebates may reduce the insulation rebate so the combined rebate does not exceed 100% of the pre-tax insulation-material purchase.
How to apply

- Apply after completing the work and required tests; new homes remain eligible for up to 12 months after occupancy permit issuance.
- Bundled attic work uses an installer checklist plus the homeowner’s insulation rebate application.
- The offer may change or end at any time.
For an existing-home project, arrange the approved pre-work blower-door test, complete the air sealing and obtain the approved post-work test. For a new home, complete the work and final test with the occupancy permit in place. Then apply through TakeCharge’s online air-sealing form and select Existing Home or New Home Construction. Provide all required information, including a valid electricity account number and test results; new-home applications also need the occupancy permit. Approval is subject to review. Allow up to eight weeks for the electricity-bill credit.
For bundled attic work, ask the approved insulation installer to include eligible air sealing in the project. After completion, the installer submits the project checklist to TakeCharge and receives the air-sealing rebate directly. You must also submit your insulation rebate application.
Newfoundland Power or Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro may visit to verify a tested air-sealing project within 15 months after the rebate is processed. They do not honour product warranties or guarantees and are not responsible for installation damage. TakeCharge may change or end the programme at any time.
