Residential heat-pump rebates
Rebates for efficient air-source and closed-loop ground-source heat pumps installed by residential cooperative members.
Αυτή η ευκαιρία είναι προς το παρόν διαθέσιμη στα Αγγλικά.
These household equipment rebates help you install an efficient heating and cooling system. For a ductless air-source heat pump of one ton or less, the rebate is $150 at the high-efficiency tier or $250 at the premium tier. For ductless systems above one ton and up to five tons, and ducted or hybrid systems up to five tons, it is $750 or $1,000 respectively. A ton is the equipment capacity used to select the rebate band.
A new closed-loop ground-source system, including its loop field, receives $400 per ton up to $4,000. Replacement heat-pump equipment receives $200 per ton up to $2,000. The total rebate cannot exceed purchase and installation costs.
Qualifying air-source installations can receive an additional $40 per ton through the Quality Installation (QI) programme. For a five-ton premium system, that makes $1,200 including the base rebate. The QI conditions below apply to this extra payment.
Rebates of $500 or less are credited to your electricity bill. Larger rebates are normally paid by mailed check, although Lake Region Electric Cooperative may credit a past-due account instead. Allow six to eight weeks for processing.
Eligibility
- You need a valid Lake Region Electric Cooperative account at the installation address. These residential rebates cover equipment installed in its service territory in west central Minnesota, including Otter Tail, Wilkin, Grant, Douglas, Clay and Becker counties.
- The air-source high-efficiency tier requires both at least 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2; the premium tier requires at least 15.2 SEER2 and 8.1 HSPF2. These are the cooling and heating efficiency ratings used on the equipment’s product-rating certificate. Use that certificate to check both ratings and the equipment size against the form.
- Ground-source heat pumps must be closed-loop and ENERGY STAR listed. Provide the equipment invoice and product-rating certificate; new systems also require the loop-field installation invoice.
- You may claim for one ductless, ducted or ground-source heat pump per member per year. Purchase or installation must fall between 1 January and 15 December 2026. Funding is first come, first served while funds remain, and the programme can change or be cancelled.
- For the additional QI rebate, you must receive residential electricity service and buy the equipment from a QI-certified contractor who installs it. QI checks correct equipment sizing, airflow, refrigerant charge and duct leakage. The contractor has passed the QI assessment and/or holds North American Technician Excellence (NATE) installation certification and follows industry best practices.
- QI equipment must be new, matched air-source equipment with at least 15 SEER or 14.3 SEER2. Matched means the outdoor condenser and indoor evaporator coil are designed by the manufacturer to work together. Commercial, reconditioned and ground-source equipment do not qualify for the extra QI rebate. Equipment must be listed by the Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI); print its product-rating certificate within two weeks of installation. A furnace’s variable-speed fan may raise the qualifying rating only if the furnace was installed within the year before the central air-source equipment purchase.
- For QI, comply with applicable installation codes, ordinances and other government or third-party requirements. The contractor must activate and test airflow and refrigerant charge when outdoor temperature meets manufacturer specifications. Submit only after testing is complete. An application denied for ineligible equipment cannot be resubmitted with changed model numbers.

- Applications are currently available and first come, first served while funds remain.
- Eligible purchases or installations must be between 1 January and 15 December 2026.
- The weather-testing exception for the optional QI supplement permits testing and submission by 31 July of the following year; it does not extend the base rebate deadline.
Check the qualifying rebate amount and programme status with Lake Region Electric Cooperative at (800) 552-7658 or rebates@lrec.coop. Install the eligible equipment, then complete and sign the current heating and cooling rebate form. Attach an invoice or paid receipt showing purchase date, equipment, manufacturer, model and serial numbers, plus the AHRI product-rating certificate. Include the loop-field installation invoice for a new ground-source system.
Email scanned documents to rebates@lrec.coop or mail them to LREC, P.O. Box 643, Pelican Rapids, MN 56572. Applications for the base rebate must reach LREC by 15 December 2026, while funds are available.
For the additional QI rebate, have your contractor sign the application and ensure the invoice details exactly match it. Complete the required testing before submitting the form and AHRI certificate. If weather prevents proper testing, the QI rules allow testing and submission by 31 July of the following year; this exception applies to the QI supplement, rather than extending the base rebate deadline. You are responsible for ensuring the cooperative receives the application materials.
