Support focuses on changes to policies, practices, community participation and power that cut Midwest carbon pollution. Priorities include a clean and affordable electricity grid, cleaner transport, lower-emission buildings, and farming practices that reduce emissions and store carbon.
Eligible work can include community organizing, research, analysis, planning and nonpartisan policy advocacy. Direct or human services are typically outside the programme. Matching funding is not required. Grants typically last one or two years, with the type and duration agreed with the applicant; there is no maximum grant request amount.
Eligibility
- Organizations generally must be based in and working in Minnesota, Wisconsin or Iowa. Other Midwest states remain invitation-only. National organizations with a direct or on-the-ground Midwest presence can also be considered; discuss your work with programme staff.
- With very few exceptions, applicants must have tax-exempt nonprofit status from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Organizations, projects and programmes with a fiscal sponsor can also be considered. A fiscal sponsor is a nonprofit organization that provides administrative oversight and takes some or all of the legal and financial responsibility for the sponsored work. Contact staff before applying through this arrangement.
- State, county and municipal government entities may apply for innovative projects. Activities traditionally the sole responsibility of government are generally excluded.
- Capital grants are considered only exceptionally. The programme excludes individual assistance and scholarships; conferences, attendance and travel; discrete project development, construction, installation or deployment costs such as materials and labour; land purchases; and activities with a specific religious purpose. Endowments and capital campaigns are excluded except in rare cases.
- Advocacy and education about executive, judicial and administrative agency policies, neutral nonpartisan information describing both sides of legislative issues, and policy research may be considered. Attempts to influence specific pending or proposed legislation, including referenda, local ordinances and resolutions, cannot be funded.

Read the programme approach and guidelines, then use the Midwest Climate & Energy team’s contact form before starting an application. Staff assess whether McKnight can consider funding and provide proposal instructions. The application link is on the programme’s How to Apply page.
Applications are accepted throughout the year in a one-step process. McKnight aims to decide and distribute funding within three months, but fourth-quarter applications can take longer. Submit by September 1 if funding in the same calendar year is critical. For applications after September 1, plan for consideration in the next calendar year.
Normally request funds once per year. New opportunities or challenging current events can justify a further request; contact staff first. Declined proposals are not automatically carried forward.
