Climate technology growth investment

Inven CapitalEurope, Israel2–30m EUR

€2–30 million minority equity investment for climate technology companies, usually at Series A–C, with a focus on Europe and Israel.

Inven Capital invests in climate technology companies with the potential to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. It publishes €2–30 million tickets and usually participates in Series A–C funding rounds, taking a minority ownership stake and ideally a board seat. The company receives capital in exchange for part of its ownership.

The strategy targets later-stage startups with resilient, scalable businesses. These are generally growth businesses already earning revenue, rather than just an idea awaiting its first customers. Relevant areas include clean energy, transport, industrial decarbonisation and technologies that help decarbonise buildings.

The active company investment strategy is described through Sub-Funds C and D: C targets companies in Europe and Israel, while D targets EU companies. The team is the contact point for assessing the appropriate investment route.

Eligibility

Companies should have a scalable climate technology business and be prepared for financial, tax, legal, technical, personnel and sustainability checks. Inven assesses the founding team’s commitment to environmental, social and governance practices. Weaknesses in ESG readiness can lead to an improvement plan; they are not automatically treated as excluded business activities.

Inven screens out activities including human-rights abuses, forced or harmful child labour, significant destruction of critical habitats, unsustainable fishing, deep-sea mining and extraction of conflict minerals. Its policy also excludes prohibited products and activities, weapons, tobacco, pornography, prostitution, political or religious projects and gambling. For a business whose main purpose is not gambling, the policy’s gambling exclusion applies above 10% of annual revenue. The linked ESG policy gives the full activity definitions and exceptions; for example, using waste as fuel in district heating is not excluded by its cross-border-waste provision.

Opaque ownership and criminal or compromising conduct are screened out. Typical investment commitments include adopting a climate policy within 12 months, measuring and reporting direct operational emissions and emissions from purchased energy, and establishing a plan to measure sustainability performance. Annual ESG reporting is tailored in the transaction documents.

The policy’s transaction terms also require the company and subsidiaries to meet the specified environmental, social, data-protection and authorisation requirements within 180 days of closing. Serious incidents must be notified promptly and within 30 business days of becoming known, with information on their effects and corrective action.
