Charging infrastructure grant
Grants for preparing residential and business-fleet parking for electric vehicles, selected public charging sites and e-mobility advice in Canton Zurich.
The programme pays grants for six types of work. The amount and conditions depend on the route you use.
- Residential parking: CHF 500 per space for the first 15 spaces and CHF 300 for each further space, for the basic electrical infrastructure that lets chargers be connected. A charger need not already be installed.
- Bidirectional DC chargers at residential parking: CHF 2,000 per charger. These chargers must let electricity flow both into the vehicle battery and back out for other uses.
- Publicly accessible resident parking: 30% of evidenced eligible costs, capped at CHF 3,000 per parking space that can charge simultaneously and CHF 450,000 per municipality.
- Park+Ride and carsharing: 30% of evidenced eligible costs, capped at CHF 3,000 per space that can charge simultaneously and CHF 60,000 per application for infrastructure plus AC chargers. Infrastructure alone is capped at CHF 500 per connection point; chargers alone at CHF 2,500 per charger.
- Business-fleet parking: 30% of eligible basic-infrastructure investment costs, capped at CHF 60,000 per application.
- E-mobility advice for municipalities and companies: 30% of advice costs, capped at CHF 10,000 per application. Where federal funding is also awarded, the cantonal grant is reduced so combined support does not exceed 50% of advice costs.
Basic infrastructure includes electrical distribution, wiring, load management and the necessary installation work. It excludes planning, increases to the grid connection's capacity and grid-cost contributions. For routes funding only basic infrastructure, charger purchase and connection costs are excluded. Investment-cost calculations exclude planning costs, and grants paid cannot exceed eligible investment costs.
Federal support available for the same measure is deducted from the cantonal amount; you must obtain that federal support yourself. Municipal grants may be combined without reducing the cantonal grant. The hydrogen-refuelling pilot intake is closed.
Eligibility
Your installation must be in Canton Zurich and designed for cars, vans or trucks. Advice must concern a municipality or company site in the canton. Installations must be carried out by certified professionals and comply with legal requirements.
- Residential basic infrastructure is for existing resident parking in buildings completed and first occupied before 2023. Only spaces reserved long term for residents count in mixed-use sites. The work must bring electrical supply immediately to the parking spaces, to at least SIA 2060 stage C1, and allow each space to function independently with charging capacity of at least 11 kW. Owners of the parking spaces or property, or their authorized representatives, apply. All owners must agree; only one application per parking facility is allowed, with no later extension application.
- Parking-space or property owners, or their representatives, can apply for bidirectional DC chargers. These chargers must meet SIA 2060's bidirectional DC definition and mainly serve residents. Existing buildings and new builds qualify. Chargers and their load-management system must have an Open Charge Point Protocol interface for connection to an external system. One application per parking space is allowed; later extensions are permitted.
- Public resident charging must retrofit existing resident parking near housing and mainly serve people without their own parking space. Municipalities, or private providers and utilities commissioned by them, apply. An expert must plan the number, type and location of chargers within a municipal charging concept demonstrating resident need. Mixed uses are assessed individually. Chargers above 22 kW are excluded. Only one application per municipality per year is normally allowed, with justified exceptions for staged or difficult sites; only one per location is allowed, without extensions.
- Park+Ride applicants are municipalities and operators; carsharing companies also qualify. New charging infrastructure at existing or new sites is eligible. Park+Ride sites must be at decentralized public-transport stops serving housing with insufficient public-transport access, generally outside the canton's “Stadtlandschaft” and “Urbane Wohnlandschaft” planning areas. The canton assesses each site against its regional transport concept. AC chargers above 22 kW are excluded. Owners must consent; one application per parking facility is allowed, without extensions.
- Fleet infrastructure is for existing buildings completed and first occupied before 2023. Only business-fleet spaces qualify, including fleets of companies renting at the site; employee, customer and visitor parking is excluded. The fleet must contain at least one vehicle but need not yet be electric, and funded spaces cannot exceed fleet size. The supply must allow at least 11 kW per space. Companies and landlords renting spaces to those companies may apply. Owners must agree; one application per business site is allowed, without extensions. Landlords must keep the spaces exclusively for business fleets for six years. Unrelated works are excluded from eligible costs.
- Advice must be provided by an energy utility or private provider and the whole commission must concern e-mobility. Studies should principally address fully electric cars or private/public charging infrastructure. Only one application per municipality or company is allowed, without extensions, and work already underway or completed is excluded.
Use local load management with a communication connection from two electrically connected spaces, or two bidirectional chargers: it distributes available charging power to avoid overloading the connection. Public resident and Park+Ride/carsharing chargers and their load-management systems also need the Open Charge Point Protocol interface.
Facilities directly controlled through cantonal government or parliament credit decisions are excluded. Federal facilities and companies more than 50% federally owned are excluded. The exception is qualifying Park+Ride facilities belonging to the federal government or to companies more than 50% federally owned.
You must operate and maintain funded installations for the intended use, generally six years, and maintain funded measures for at least six years. Commit at application to using 100% renewable electricity for six years from the funding commitment and provide proof of its origin for that period. Allow inspections of the installation and related documents. Report changes after applying immediately, within four weeks at the latest; report material changes to funded measures immediately. Grants may be reduced, withheld or recovered for noncompliance, misleading information, misuse or deviations from the application. Property owners must deduct grants from investment costs when calculating rent increases.
How to apply
- Status
- closes 31 Dec 2026
- Closes
- Round restrictions
- Funds allocated in order of complete applications; more than 98% committed as of 8 October 2026.
- Stops earlier if funds are exhausted; no legal entitlement.
- Apply before work except the documented small residential retrospective procedure.
Apply online through the Gebäudeprogramm portal; the programme is administered by the cantonal energy funding office at AWEL. Choose your measure and submit the required supporting documents. Applications combining residential basic infrastructure, bidirectional chargers or fleet infrastructure require separate applications for each measure.
For up to four residential basic-infrastructure spaces (grant up to CHF 2,000), or one bidirectional DC charger (CHF 2,000), complete the work and submit the combined grant/payment application within six months of completion. You carry the risk of failing the funding conditions. For larger installations, submit before building starts, wait for the decision, complete the work, then request payment within one year of the funding commitment. For Park+Ride, fleet and public resident charging, also apply before construction and await the response. For advice, apply before the work starts, await the response and request payment after completion within one year of the funding commitment. Public resident charging has its own commitment validity: one year or end 2025, whichever is later; any extension for ongoing applications is subject to budget and cannot exceed end 2026.
Submit a complete application promptly: on 8 October 2026 more than 98% of the budget was already committed. Remaining funds are allocated by the time the complete application is received, including all attachments. Incomplete drafts will be deleted when the budget limit is reached. New applications stop when funds run out, and the programme ends no later than 31 December 2026. There is no entitlement to a grant.
