Energy efficiency rebates
Rebates help Traverse Electric members replace household appliances, install efficient residential heat pumps and replace inefficient nonresidential lighting.
Esta oportunidad está disponible actualmente en inglés.
New ENERGY STAR replacement refrigerators and freezers receive $50 each; dishwashers, clothes washers and clothes dryers receive $25 each.
A qualifying residential electric heat pump of at least 2 tons receives $600: $400 from East River and $200 from Traverse Electric. A qualifying ductless electric heat pump under 2 tons receives $300, split equally between the two cooperatives.
For replacement lighting in nonresidential buildings, the combined rebate is $0.20 for each watt of reduced power demand, up to $1,000 per structure. East River and Traverse Electric each fund half.
Eligibility
You must be a Traverse Electric member. The cooperative serves installations in parts of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
- Appliances must be new ENERGY STAR replacements in a permanent residence. Seasonal accounts, new construction and farm shops do not qualify. Only one rebate per appliance is paid at each location.
- The larger residential heat-pump rebate covers unattached single-family homes, with the multi-unit exception below. Equipment must be new and at least 2 tons. The outside unit must meet a heating-efficiency rating of HSPF 8.8 or higher, or HSPF2 7.5 or higher. These are the two ratings identified in the policy; check the equipment specification for the applicable rating. Only one residential electric heating incentive is paid per structure every ten years.
- Condos, townhomes and duplexes count as individual units for the larger heat-pump rebate when each unit has a qualifying heating system, or the capacity of the building’s system divided by its living units meets the minimum qualification.
- Ductless electric equipment must be new, under 2 tons and meet the same HSPF or HSPF2 thresholds. Only one mini-split incentive is paid per structure every ten years. You may receive both heating rebates within that period if they cover separate equipment. Condos, townhomes and duplexes count individually for this rebate only when each unit has its own qualifying system.
- Lighting support is for replacing inefficient systems in nonresidential settings. Traverse Electric Member Services must verify that the new lights were installed.

Contact Traverse Electric Member Services through the office at 320-563-8616 or 800-927-5443 to request the relevant rebate. For appliances, payment is processed from purchase receipts; refrigerators and freezers also require proof of disposal of the old appliance.
For a refrigerator or freezer, complete the linked disposal form and attach the disposal receipt. The signed certification requires transfer to a licensed recycler and removal from the grid, with no resale or reuse. Refrigeration and mercury components must be decommissioned, and refrigerants and CFCs recycled under applicable federal, state and local laws. Mail the form and receipt to Traverse Electric Co-op, P.O. Box 66, Wheaton, MN 56296.
For replacement lighting, arrange verification of the installed lights with Member Services.
