Climate adaptation grant
Grants help residents improve their self-occupied homes in Bad Kreuznach with rainwater collection, greening, trees and removal of sealed surfaces.
Tämän rahoitusmahdollisuuden kuvaus on toistaiseksi englanniksi.
The grant supports voluntary work that reduces heat and rainwater runoff and improves biodiversity. Combined measures can receive up to €7,500, with separate limits for each type of work. You receive no more than the evidenced eligible costs.
- Remove sealed surfacing and green the area: €80/m², up to €4,000, including soil preparation and planting.
- Rainwater collection and use: up to €2,000.
- Green roofs: €150/m², up to €3,000.
- Green façades: €100/m² up to €2,000 for plants rooted in the ground; €200/m² up to €3,000 for plants rooted in permanent containers; or €300/m² of installed planting system up to €5,000 for plants growing in modules attached to the wall.
- New native trees: €200 per tree, up to €1,000.
- Convert a lawful gravel garden to natural planting: €60/m², up to €3,000.
Professional material and installation or planting costs include VAT. For DIY work, only invoiced materials and necessary tool or machinery rental count. Your own labour, buying tools, hire purchase and leasing of tools or machinery do not count. The same measure cannot receive funding from another programme.
You pay for and complete the work before requesting the grant payment. A lower actual eligible cost reduces the payment. The city decides at its discretion and processes complete applications in arrival order while funds remain.
Eligibility
You must be a private individual whose main residence is in Bad Kreuznach. The dwelling must be in the city and you must live in it yourself. You can own it, hold a property-based right to use it such as a heritable building right, or rent it. Tenants need their landlord’s consent in text form showing the tenant’s address. Landlords and legal entities cannot apply.
- Work must be voluntary and carried out properly. Legally required measures, remediation of unlawful gravel gardens, public or commercial sites, replacement planting, invasive plants and plants unsuitable for the site are excluded.
- Unsealing must total at least 2 m². Loosen the soil and/or plant native species afterwards; the €80/m² grant requires subsequent greening. Do not reseal it during the preservation period.
- Rainwater systems must be properly installed and functional.
- Green roofs must total at least 2 m², have at least 8 cm of growing substrate, and use perennial plants, mainly insect-friendly, with at least an extensive green roof: a planted substrate layer. Structurally connected roof areas count as one object.
- Green façades must total at least 2 m² and use suitable climbing supports and perennial planting, preferably native and appropriate to the site. Permanent containers must be suitable for the plants’ long-term development.
- Trees must be native species. Gravel-garden conversion must cover a contiguous area of at least 2 m² with native, insect-friendly planting.
Apply before any binding purchase, rental or works contract, call-off order, advance or part payment, or on-site work. Wait until the award notice is communicated before starting. Getting quotes, preparing plans and other preparatory investigations do not count as starting.
Keep the funded measure in its completed condition for five years from the payout decision, and transfer this duty to a new property owner. The city may inspect the site after giving notice and examine your records. The local rules require five years’ record retention; the incorporated general conditions specify five years after submitting proof of use, unless another law requires longer retention.
The general conditions apply where the local rules do not provide an exception. Keep an inventory of funded items worth more than €800. Report changes to the purpose, relevant circumstances, other public funding requests or financing, inability to achieve the purpose, unused inventoried items and insolvency proceedings immediately. For orders above €10,000 excluding VAT, seek at least three suitable offers where possible; orders up to that amount can be awarded directly. Document the process. For construction, notify the designated building authority of procurement, start and completion, follow the approved plans and obtain prior consent from the granting authority for significant changes to the planned building work, significant increases in operating costs or significant overruns of construction costs.
False information, removing or materially changing the measure, misuse or breach of award conditions can lead to partial or full recovery. General recovery rules provide annual interest of five percentage points above the applicable base rate.
You must be able to manage the grant properly and prove its intended use. Secure the project’s overall financing and be financially able to use and maintain the installation properly.

Download the application Excel file from the city’s programme page. Submit it through the form on that page, together with a signed scan or photo, before-photos, quotes or cost estimates and suitable plans, sketches or planting lists proving that your measure meets the conditions. Tenants must attach landlord consent. The city’s Stadtbauamt, Abteilung Bauverwaltung, handles the written application.
After approval, complete and pay for the work. Use the payout form on the same page and submit the editable Excel file, signed scan, after-photos, invoices, payment evidence and plans or planting lists reflecting the work completed. Payment follows a successful check and the award becoming final.
Under the general conditions, submit proof of use within six months of fulfilling the purpose, and no later than the end of the sixth month after the award period. If the purpose is not fulfilled by year end, an interim proof for amounts received that year is due within four months after year end. These conditions apply subject to the local rules’ exceptions.
