Whole-home heat-pump rebate
Rebates for Wellesley residential electricity customers installing heat pumps as their home’s primary heating system.
Tämän rahoitusmahdollisuuden kuvaus on toistaiseksi englanniksi.
Wellesley Municipal Light Plant (WMLP) pays $8,500 when your installer confirms that your existing heating system was removed or taken out of service (decommissioned), or $6,500 without removal or decommissioning. These are the 2026 whole-home rebate levels; the level in effect when you apply governs your payment. Heat pumps provide efficient heating and cooling with lower greenhouse-gas emissions than traditional fossil-fuel or electric-resistance systems.
This entry covers your first heat-pump rebate for a customer account, for an existing home you own, using an installer from Abode’s participating contractor list. WMLP pays you by mailed check after installation, quality assurance (QA) review and passing Town inspections. You pay and arrange your installer’s work.
The rebate cannot exceed the heat-pump project’s total installation costs. WMLP’s common rebate terms also exclude sales tax and installation costs from the rebate and cap it at the purchase price. Account for both limits when budgeting.
The heat pump must remain your primary heating system. If it is found not to be used that way, WMLP charges your electricity account the difference between the whole-home and partial-home rebates. WMLP may inspect the installation and removal of old heating. False or incorrect information can lead to nonpayment, repayment and exclusion from future programmes.
WMLP, the Center for EcoTechnology (CET) and Abode do not warranty the equipment or installer’s work, and estimated energy savings are not guaranteed. WMLP may change or end the rebate programme at any time.
Eligibility
- You need an active WMLP residential electricity account with at least six months of satisfactory payments, no overdue balance both when applying and when the rebate is issued, and no municipal tax liens on the property or service address. If you are a newer customer, you may provide a letter or statements from your previous electricity utility to show your payment history.
- Install at your account’s service address. This entry covers homes you own and accounts that have not previously received a heat-pump rebate. A whole-home rebate is limited to one per customer account and cannot be combined with that account’s partial-home rebates.
- The spaces being converted must be heated by oil, propane or electricity, or have no existing heat. Natural-gas-heated spaces are excluded. Leased equipment, equipment included when buying a residence, new construction, additions of 500 square feet or more, and major or gut renovations where the equipment is needed to meet the current building code are excluded.
- Use new heat pumps on the NEEP Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump Product List. For installations from 1 January 2026, select equipment using an A2L refrigerant such as R-454B or R-32; R410A equipment is ineligible. Your contractor supplies each system’s AHRI identification number so Abode can verify the equipment against the list.
- The system must condition 100% of your home’s living space by volume and supply 90–120% of the home’s heating needs at an outdoor temperature of 9°F. Your installer must provide a Manual J heat-load calculation: a report that determines the home’s heating needs so the proposed system can be checked for correct sizing. Abode can request further sizing evidence or deny improperly sized systems.
- For a home built before 1 January 2013, get a home energy assessment within the three years before installation.
- Outdoor units need stands giving at least 12 inches of ground clearance, unless adequately shielded from snow on the top and sides. A new outdoor unit, rather than a replacement, needs a plot plan showing it does not intrude into a Town setback area.
- Building and electrical permits are required, plus a sheet-metal permit for ductwork. The installation must pass the relevant Town inspections.
- Your installer’s quality assurance (QA) review covers pressure testing and evacuation of refrigerant lines, sealed and protected wall penetrations, safe condensate drainage, level outdoor units with airflow and snow clearance, labelled electrical breakers, suitable thermostat positioning and showing you how to use the controls. Where applicable, refrigerant from decommissioned equipment must be safely recovered, and new ductwork must be sealed and insulated to at least R-8. Ducts and air handlers in unconditioned spaces also require sealed duct joints and seams and at least R-8 insulation, the programme’s minimum insulation rating.

- Apply before installation and wait for WMLP/Abode preliminary approval before work.
- Installer QA form due within 12 months of Abode approving the application.
- WMLP may modify or terminate the rebate at any time.
- Choose an installer from Abode’s participating contractor list and obtain a quote. For a pre-2013 home, complete the required energy assessment before installation. Your installer prepares the Manual J calculation and equipment identification details.
- Submit the WMLP Whole-Home Heat Pump Rebate Application before installation. Include the quote, each system’s AHRI number, any auxiliary electric-resistance heating capacity, the Manual J report and the energy-audit date where required. Include the audit report if applicable and available. WMLP and Abode assess the proposal; wait for preliminary approval before beginning heat-pump or associated weatherization work.
- Your installer obtains the Town permits and completes the installation and inspections. For the $8,500 level, the installer must attest that the previous primary heating system was removed or decommissioned.
- Have your installer submit Abode’s Post-Installation Quality Assurance (QA) Form within 12 months of Abode approving your application, after all required inspections have passed. Supply the final paid invoice showing a zero balance and equipment model numbers, AHRI certificates and the installation photographs requested by the form.
- After WMLP and Abode review the QA form and confirm inspection and programme compliance, WMLP mails the rebate check to your address on record.
