Green home improvement mortgage top-up
Borrow £5,000–£20,000 for eligible home energy improvements if you already have a Nationwide mortgage, with 0% interest for the first two or five years.

Use this additional mortgage loan for solar panels and storage; loft, wall, floor, pipe or boiler insulation; efficient heating including smart controls, electric boilers and heat pumps; energy-saving windows, doors and draught proofing; hot-water systems including solar-powered tanks; rainwater harvesting; electric vehicle chargers and battery storage; mechanical ventilation with heat recovery; or small wind turbines. Essential supporting work, such as scaffolding, rewiring or adjusting fixtures, can also qualify.
You repay the borrowing as a mortgage secured on your home. There is no product fee. Choose an initial two- or five-year fixed period at 0% interest. When that period ends, any outstanding balance automatically moves to Nationwide’s variable Standard Mortgage Rate. You may be able to switch to another rate, depending on availability and eligibility. Your home could be repossessed if you do not keep up mortgage payments.
Eligibility
- You must be a UK resident aged at least 18 and an existing member with a Nationwide-branded mortgage on which you have made at least one monthly payment. Lending is subject to Nationwide’s assessment and criteria.
- Your existing mortgage plus the additional borrowing must not exceed 90% of your home’s value. You can have only one Green Additional Borrowing mortgage per property.
- Spend the entire additional loan on eligible improvements. You cannot reimburse completed work or repay other debts, even if those debts paid deposits or costs for the improvements.
- Excluded work includes installations that prevent you from living in your home during the work, routine maintenance, green roofs and living walls, damp proofing, gas boilers, all like-for-like upgrades, and structural upgrades such as replacing construction elements.
- General additional borrowing cannot raise money for a business or buy land or property intended for letting.
- With an interest-only mortgage, regular payments cover interest while the borrowed amount must be repaid separately. If you already have one and borrow more on a repayment basis, Nationwide requires evidence of a plan to repay your existing interest-only debt. If you want new interest-only borrowing, you must meet Nationwide’s full interest-only lending criteria and have a plan to repay that additional debt. Increasing existing interest-only borrowing also requires evidence of a repayment plan for both the existing and new debt.
