Business Energy Grant
The closed 2023 intake offered £500–£5,000 for businesses in Broxtowe to improve the energy efficiency of their premises.
Cette fiche est actuellement disponible en anglais.
The 2023 grant supported small improvements such as LED lighting, insulation, heating or cooling systems, electronic thermostats, extra thermostatic controls and PVC strip curtains to reduce draughts. A recent energy audit had to identify the proposed work and its carbon savings.
These are the terms of the closed 2023 intake. Projects had to finish by 31 March 2024. Grants of £500–£2,000 had no compulsory business contribution; grants of £2,001–£5,000 required 20% cash match funding from the business. Applicants had to show the full project cost and secure any money needed beyond the grant. The grant calculation excluded VAT.
The business paid suppliers in full before claiming reimbursement. Funding could be withheld or recovered if the offer-letter or contract conditions were breached.
Eligibility
For the 2023 intake:
- Your business had to be registered and based in Broxtowe Borough, with premises located and operating there, fewer than 250 employees, at least six months of trading and a business bank account. It had to pay business rates to Broxtowe or be exempt.
- Sole traders, partnerships, limited companies and social enterprises or Community Interest Companies could apply. Charities qualified if registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation or also registered in one of those eligible legal forms.
- The energy audit had to show how the investment would reduce carbon emissions. Proposed measures needed current carbon-footprint, cost and before-and-after carbon-savings calculations, plus an explanation of how they supported the building’s ongoing operation or maintenance. A suitable existing audit could be used without completing the council’s audit phase.
- Equipment had to be bought outright; leasing was excluded. Second-hand equipment was permitted with a quote addressed to the business. Purchases from companies with shared directors, or directors who were close family members of your directors, were not allowed.
- The grant excluded furniture, computer-system purchase or installation, security equipment, employment and running costs, vehicles, stock, consumables, rent and associated bills, business rates and planning fees. General office or other equipment qualified only if the audit identified it as an energy-saving device; other improvements not advised in the audit and costs already incurred were excluded.

- The 2023 intake could close earlier if all funding was allocated. Projects had to be completed by 31 March 2024.[^c5]
The 2023 intake required applicants to download the council’s application form and email it to SPFGrants@broxtowe.gov.uk with the subject “Energy Grant” and the business name. The completed audit had to be attached. The closing date was 15 December 2023, with earlier closure possible if funding was allocated. This application route and its terms describe that historical intake.
Applicants needed at least two quotes for each item of expenditure and three for a grant project above £3,000. Quotes had to be addressed to the business and show costs excluding VAT; a retailer webpage screenshot and link showing the price could be used if the retailer could not supply a quote.
Before applying, applicants had to check proposed alterations with the council’s planning department. Structural changes required the building owner’s consent; changes to a landlord’s heating or lighting systems required a landlord support letter. Small changes such as replacing LED bulbs did not require planning or landlord permission.
Successful applicants had to sign and return the offer letter and contract, meet the agreed milestones and contribute to the scheme’s outputs and outcomes. They had to follow the contract’s monitoring and reporting schedule, retain and submit receipts and invoices, allow project publicity, follow publicity and grant-use guidance, take part in periodic business surveys, sign up to council business newsletters and engage with local business clubs.
Applicants could not order, pay for or commission goods or services before receiving an offer letter. Supplier changes needed council approval. The claim, invoices and proof of payment had to reach the council within one month of the completion date stated in that letter. Reimbursement depended on satisfactory completion and compliance with the scheme’s terms.
Suppliers had to be legitimate businesses and receive payment from the applicant’s business account. Cash, cheque, third-party payments and payments directly to individuals were ineligible. Credit-card payments qualified only if the card was registered to the business. The council paid the reimbursement into the business or trading-as account by bank transfer.
