Home solar electricity grant
A grant of up to €1,800 helps homeowners install solar panels that generate electricity for their home. The amount depends on the size of the system.

The Solar PV Scheme contributes to buying and installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, which turn sunlight into electricity for your home.
The grant pays €700 for each kilowatt of peak panel capacity (kWp) up to 2 kWp, then €200 for each additional kWp up to 4 kWp. The maximum is €1,800. Part-kilowatt sizes receive proportional support: a 2.5 kWp system receives €1,500.
SEAI pays after the completed installation and its documents have been checked and approved. You must have paid the installation company or entered into a financing agreement with it before claiming. A breach of the scheme conditions can lead to withdrawal or full repayment of the grant.
Eligibility
For the individual homeowner route, you must own a private residence in the Republic of Ireland. Normally, it must have been built and occupied before 1 January 2021 and must not have received SEAI support for solar PV before. Only one solar PV system is supported per property, and the measures must not already have government funding.
Use a solar PV company that is active on SEAI’s register both when you apply and when the work takes place. Electrical work must be carried out by an authorised electrician registered with Safe Electric Ireland. You must obtain the necessary permissions and approvals for the installation. If you are a registered solar PV installer or company carrying out work on your own home, your labour is not eligible for grant support.
There are special rules if you receive, have received or will receive local-authority funding under the defective concrete blocks remediation legislation. The rules excluding homes that previously received SEAI solar PV support, or requiring homes to have been built before a specific date, do not apply. The requirement to obtain grant approval before buying products or starting work is also waived where the relevant work had started or been completed before the ministerial announcement of 13 June 2024. SEAI may accept a declaration confirming the work is complete from a building professional who qualifies as a Competent Building Professional under the remediation rules. If your combined grant payments exceed €10,000 in one calendar year, this route requires a Revenue Tax Clearance Certificate before payment.

- Choose an SEAI-registered solar PV company. For the standard route, apply through the SEAI application portal and wait for grant approval before purchasing products or starting installation. You will need the property’s Eircode and its Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), the 11-digit number on your electricity bill, plus your chosen company, system size and bank details. In exceptional circumstances, SEAI can accept a paper application; email solarpv@seai.ie to request a form. Sign and return the postal offer’s acceptance form by the deadline SEAI gives you, or the offer will lapse.
- Complete the installation and submit the required paperwork within eight months of receiving grant approval. Your company submits the installation documents. Arrange a post-installation Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment—a home energy rating—with an SEAI-registered assessor, who publishes it on the national register.
- If you change your solar PV company, cancel your grant offer and reapply before work starts. Changes to system size or type require SEAI’s prior approval. A new application uses the grant amount available when you reapply.
Keep the installation records and allow any required inspection. If selected, you normally must provide access within 14 days of the request; an exception must be accepted by the inspector. You must also allow required remedial work. Payments depend on the scheme’s annual funding allocation and can be deferred if it is exhausted.
