Green-roof and rainwater disconnection grant

Property owners in twelve Dutch municipalities can receive up to €5,000 per measure for green roofs or keeping roof rainwater out of the sewer.

Cette fiche est actuellement disponible en anglais.

This entry covers the joint As50+, Land van Cuijk and Brabantse Peel scheme. It funds water-retaining green roofs and disconnecting roof downpipes so rainwater stays on your land and soaks into the ground.

A green roof must retain at least 30 litres per square metre. The grant is up to €40 per square metre, capped at €5,000 per measure and at the amount you spend on the green roof.

For disconnected roof area, the maximum rates are:

Where the water goes Eleven municipalities other than Land van Cuijk Land van Cuijk
Your unpaved, planted land €4/m² €2/m²
Your unpaved, planted land through storage of at least 100 litres €6/m² €3/m²
Storage/infiltration facility holding at least 30 litres per m² of roof €20/m² €10/m²

Each measure is capped at €5,000. You can apply for a green roof and disconnection in one application, but they must cover different roof sections.

A wadi is a shallow depression where rainwater collects and gradually soaks into the soil. Its base must sit above the average highest groundwater level, and the ground must drain well. Underground infiltration crates and gravel trenches are other supported options; above-ground infiltration is preferred because it is easier to maintain.

Eligibility

You must own the property, as an individual, a private legal entity or a partnership of those applicants. National government, provinces, municipalities and water boards are excluded.

The property must be in Asten, Bernheze, Boekel, Deurne, Gemert-Bakel, Helmond, Laarbeek, Land van Cuijk, Maashorst, Meierijstad, Oss or Someren. Normally it must be in the urban area defined by Noord-Brabant's environmental ordinance; the programme page links a map. Outside that urban area, roof disconnection can qualify if the building is connected to a gravity sewer, where wastewater flows under gravity.

  • Work must not have started before you submit the complete application. Apply at least eight weeks before starting, unless the board sets another deadline, and no earlier than six months before the work.
  • The improvement must comply with applicable law. Legally required measures, replacement of comparable measures and maintenance do not qualify. Do not add copper, zinc, lead, nickel, chromium or other leaching materials; disconnecting an existing metal gutter/downpipe is permitted.
  • The same measure on the same roof section must not have received this subsidy before. You cannot also apply for or receive a subsidy for that measure under another scheme with similar activities, or have the water board finance the disconnection or storage another way.
  • Disconnected rainwater must stay on your own land and cannot flow back into the sewer. The soil must let it infiltrate. For direct drainage into planted land, the administrator's guideline is a planted area at least as large as the disconnected roof. A barrel must hold at least 100 litres and use a filling device with an overflow set, so surplus water goes into the garden.
  • Underground drainage to an infiltration facility requires a leaf separator and sand trap in the downpipe. Design storage to prevent nuisance on neighbours' land. Any emergency overflow at the infiltration facility must be visible and above ground.
  • Keep each measure in good condition for at least five years. Otherwise the grant may be recovered partly or fully; the water board can request further evidence.

The general rules also allow refusal for purely commercial objectives, lack of demonstrated need for subsidy, poor geographic distribution, lack of a clear connection with the water board's core activities, already-funded regular activities, or a purpose already substantially provided for another way. Activities contrary to law or water-board policy, unlawful subsidy awards and applications exceeding the budget must be refused.

Conditions de cette période de candidature
  • 2026 municipal budgets; complete applications are handled in arrival order. Land van Cuijk uses form f/3034. Apply at least eight weeks before work unless the board sets another period, and no earlier than six months before.

Apply to Waterschap Aa en Maas through the form for the eleven municipalities outside Land van Cuijk, or the Land van Cuijk form. Provide the roof area, a photograph of the current situation, a description and plan, a cost budget and financing plan, any available quotations and the form's required attachments. Disclose other subsidy or financial-support applications for the same activity.

Complete applications are handled in arrival order. The 2026 budget is divided by municipality; applications are refused when the relevant municipal ceiling is reached. The scheme runs through 2028, with separate ceilings to be announced for 2027 and 2028.

After approval you have six months to complete the measure. Take photographs before, during and after the work from the same perspective, showing the roof, the receiving planted land/storage or the infiltration facility. For a green roof, provide invoices or material purchase receipts showing area and water-storage capacity, plus payment evidence; material purchase receipts require an aerial photograph. For disconnection, supply an aerial or satellite photograph showing the disconnected roof area and available receipts/invoices.

Normally apply for final grant determination within eight weeks of finishing, with an activity report and income/expenditure statement. For grants up to €5,000 the board may instead determine the grant automatically, or issue only a final determination; follow the evidence requirements in your decision. Payment normally follows within six weeks of final determination, unless the decision sets another period.

Notify the board when it becomes apparent that work or grant conditions will not be fulfilled. Inform it promptly in writing about stopping the activity, relevant financial or organizational changes involving third parties, bankruptcy/payment suspension, developments threatening compliance, and changes to statutes affecting legal form, directors or purpose, and dissolution of the legal entity.
