Climate adaptation subsidy

You must be a Westerkwartier resident applying as an individual who owns the property, or as a tenant or leaseholder with the owner's written consent. The dwelling, associated buildings and land must be legally built and registered in the Dutch buildings and addresses register (BAG). The measures described here are for private property; businesses cannot claim them.

• Trees must be deciduous species on the regulation's Annex 1 tree list. At planting they must meet the specified minimum trunk circumference of 8–10 cm, measured 1 metre above ground. Planting required under a replanting obligation is excluded, and boundary-distance rules must be respected.
• A roof or façade project must be on a structure at least two years old. Green and herb roofs need drainage, growing-medium and vegetation layers at least 8 cm thick in total, and a roof structure able to carry them. Herb roofs must combine sedum with at least 30% flowers and herbs. Façade support covers modules with an artificial growing medium, rather than climbers growing from the ground.
• A rainwater reuse system needs a tank of at least 1,000 litres, filters, a pump and water distribution, with access for maintenance and inspection. It may supply toilets, washing machines, washing/process water or comparable uses, or garden drip irrigation. It must not supply drinking water or spray or mist water.

Install measures properly, obtain required permits and keep them permanently in place and well maintained. Repairs to existing measures are excluded. Allow any on-site inspection. Repeat applications for the same property count together towards each category's maximum amount or number of items.

You cannot obtain duplicate subsidy for the same activity. The work must serve the municipality or its residents, need the subsidy and fit municipal policy; unlawful awards and religious, philosophical or political advocacy can be refused. An award must be withdrawn and recovered if a refusal ground is later found to have applied. Immediately inform the municipality in writing if you cannot complete the funded activities or meet the obligations, or if there are relevant changes in your financial or organizational relationships with third parties.

• For fresh purchases and work in Westerkwartier; apply within six months after purchase and completion. The 2026 ceiling is €40,000; complete applications are considered in arrival order.[^c1][^c4][^c5][^c14]

For purchases and work you undertake now, check the conditions on subsidieaanvragen.nl before starting. Take a clear photo before the work and another after completion, showing the property. For underground work, also photograph installation. Keep the dated receipt or invoice and any required permits and written owner consent.

After purchase and completion, create an account through the Westerkwartier application portal and submit the completed, signed application within six months of both purchase and realization. For purchases below €250, provide a dated purchase receipt; from €250, provide an invoice with technical specifications and purchase and/or execution date. Attach the photos and applicable permissions. The municipality may request other necessary information.

The 2026 budget is €40,000. Complete applications are processed in order of receipt until that ceiling is reached; an application that would exceed it is refused in full. The decision normally comes within eight weeks of a complete application, with a possible four-week extension. Approval also fixes the final award, payable within eight weeks afterwards.
