Charge Up New Jersey vehicle incentive
New Jersey individuals can receive $1,500 off an eligible new electric vehicle purchase or lease, or $4,000 with income prequalification.
Ez a lehetőség jelenleg angolul érhető el.
Charge Up New Jersey reduces the price of a new battery-electric vehicle at a participating New Jersey dealership or showroom. The dealer deducts the incentive from your purchase or lease contract and claims reimbursement; it is not a payment you claim after buying the car. The base incentive is $1,500, with a further $2,500 through Charge Up+ for eligible income-qualified applicants.
FY27 funding is first come, first served and can close when funds are committed. The programme currently lists Charge Up as open. FY27 will close on or before 30 June 2027.
Eligibility
- You must be an individual New Jersey resident with a current New Jersey driver’s licence. Businesses, commercial entities, governments and public bodies cannot apply. Active-duty military personnel stationed in New Jersey may instead provide current military orders and a valid out-of-state licence. Applicants must be over 18, except for emancipated minors.
- Buy or lease an eligible new light-duty battery-electric vehicle through a participating New Jersey dealer or showroom, with the vehicle registered in New Jersey. The vehicle’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) cap is $55,000. Include vehicle-value upgrades such as battery, wheel and infotainment packages; exclude taxes, delivery charges, registration and documentation fees, maintenance packages and accessories unrelated to vehicle value. Used vehicles, plug-in hybrids, conversions, scooters, motorcycles, all-terrain and low-speed vehicles are excluded. There are specific dealer-vehicle exceptions: floor-model and test-drive vehicles may qualify if never previously registered in any state. The administrator assesses these individually, along with vehicles returned shortly after sale or because financing was refused (a “rollback”), and vehicles registered for a sale that was never completed, where the buyer never took delivery (an “unwind”). Rollback and unwind vehicles require the administrator’s eligibility determination.
- For ordinary FY27 transactions, the order, purchase or lease must take place on or after 1 July 2026. The purchase or lease and delivery must occur in New Jersey. Online orders placed with a participating New Jersey dealer for delivery in New Jersey qualify even if you are physically elsewhere when ordering. The terms retain a conditional transition exception: if FY26 did not close before 30 June 2026, FY26 orders or purchases may qualify when the purchase or lease is completed in FY27.
- Keep ownership or an active lease and New Jersey registration for at least 36 consecutive months. An original lease must run for at least 36 months; lease transfers and assumptions are not allowed. Remain a New Jersey resident for two years after delivery, except for qualifying military personnel whose permanent residency is elsewhere.
- Early sale, return, trade-in or departure from New Jersey can trigger repayment of a prorated incentive. Contact the Center for Sustainable Energy programme administrator before an unavoidable early sale or return. Documented exemptions may be approved for military relocation, death or a totaled vehicle; other circumstances require a written request. Replacement of a defective vehicle needs programme approval. Failure to meet earlier incentive conditions can put new applications on hold.
- You can receive no more than three vehicle incentives during the programme’s ten-year life. Agree to programme communications and do not modify the vehicle’s emissions-control hardware or software.
For Charge Up+, your 2025 federal modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), verified through tax documentation, must be no more than $75,000 for single filers, $112,500 for heads of household or $150,000 for joint filers. Alternatively, provide proof of active enrolment in an approved assistance programme: General Assistance, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Lifeline, Lifeline Utility Assistance Program, Medicaid, Section 8 Housing, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Universal Service Fund/Heating Energy Assistance (USFHEA), Weatherization Assistance Program, Universal Service Fund, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric, Choice Voucher Program, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Comfort Partners, Social Security Disability Insurance and Social Security participants also need a self-attestation of additional or unearned income. Tax dependants cannot receive the additional incentive.
The income route accepts a processed 2025 IRS Tax Return Transcript. If you have not filed for 2025, supply a 2024 transcript and IRS Verification of Non-Filing for 2025. An unprocessed tax form or IRS Account Transcript is not accepted.

- First come, first served; the programme can close once funds are committed.
- Dealer reimbursement application is due within 14 calendar days of the vehicle transaction date.
- Charge Up+ prequalification must be approved before ordering, purchasing or leasing.
- FY27 closes on or before 30 June 2027; funds may be fully committed earlier.
For the $1,500 base incentive, choose an eligible vehicle and participating dealership; you do not need to submit a consumer online application. Sign the programme terms and ensure the dealer has them at delivery. Check that the incentive appears as a deduction in your purchase or lease paperwork. The dealer submits the reimbursement application within 14 calendar days of the vehicle transaction date.
For Charge Up+, apply in the online portal and obtain approval before ordering, buying or leasing. Show the dealer your approved prequalification ID. It is valid for 150 days or until the programme pauses or closes, whichever comes first; prequalification alone does not reserve funding. The additional incentive cannot be added after purchase or after the dealer has submitted the vehicle application.
If ordering for later delivery, ensure the dealer reserves funds at order, at least 14 calendar days before programme closure. The vehicle’s MSRP must be the same at order and at the purchase or lease transaction. A reserved order must be delivered within 365 days of application; the dealer may request a discretionary extension before cancellation. Final documents are due within 14 calendar days after delivery. If the dealer will not reserve funds, it must give you written notice: eligibility and funding will then be assessed when the purchase or lease takes place.
If the dealer’s reimbursement application is denied or cancelled because of its own error or penalty, the dealer cannot recover the incentive from you or reduce it after purchase.
