Municipal species and climate protection grant
Grants for resident homeowners and tenants to install fixed rainwater storage or infiltration systems in Werther (Westf.).

The municipal programme supports local climate action and adaptation. This page covers its rainwater route: a cistern for garden watering or an infiltration system that allows rain falling on sealed surfaces to soak into the ground.
The grant pays 30% of eligible costs, up to €1,250 for the rainwater system. Eligible costs include necessary planning and construction services, materials and equipment, supported by itemised final invoices. Your household can receive no more than €1,500 across the programme per year, and only one of each measure is funded per household.
Payment follows completion and submission of all required evidence. Other grants can be combined only where their programmes allow it; the city does not check compatibility, and its grant could affect support from another funder. Grants are discretionary and depend on available municipal funds.
Eligibility
- You must be an adult with your primary residence in Werther (Westf.) and own or rent the privately used property there. The installation must be in Werther, on or at a private residential building or its associated aboveground ancillary building.
- The system must be fixed in place. A cistern must hold at least 1,500 litres; an infiltration system must be able to take in at least 1,500 litres of rainwater over a short period. A specialist company must carry out construction.
- Obtain written grant approval before ordering, commissioning or starting the work. Work must be lawful. Measures required by building or nature-conservation rules, or by other city agreements or provisions, are excluded.
- Renovation, renewal or expansion of an existing system using the same operating principle is excluded. Your own labour is ineligible, as are measures whose cost reasonableness cannot be clearly established.
- Keep the system for its approved purpose for eight years from the grant approval date. Removing it early requires repayment. The city may inspect by prior arrangement and conduct spot checks; misuse or breaches of the rules may lead to recovery of the grant.

Use the 2026 rainwater-storage/infiltration application form and submit it with the required documents to Stadt Werther (Westf.), Klimaschutzmanagement, Mühlenstraße 2, 33824 Werther (Westf.). Include a dimensioned site plan and photos showing the area draining into the system, plus the specialist company’s quotation. Wait for written approval before ordering or starting.
After completion, submit the specialist installation invoice and all required evidence; the form requires the original final invoice for payment. Invoices must identify the supplier, buyer/user, measure and property, products and costs.
