Energirenoveringspuljen helps owners improve the energy efficiency of year-round residential buildings in Denmark. It funds specified insulation and window improvements, heat-recovery ventilation and conversion to water-based radiators or underfloor heating when switching to a heat pump or district heating. The purpose is to save energy and reduce CO₂ emissions. The Danish Energy Agency administers the grant.
The owner pays the project costs and claims the grant after completion and payment. The grant uses fixed rates, generally multiplied by the eligible area recorded in the energy certificate. It does not reimburse a fixed percentage of your invoice. The calculated renovation grant must be at least DKK 5,000. You finance the remaining cost.
| Measure | No deduction of project VAT | Project VAT deducted |
|---|---|---|
| External insulation of solid or lightweight walls | DKK 180/m² | DKK 145/m² |
| Roof or loft insulation | DKK 70/m² | DKK 55/m² |
| Ground-floor insulation or replacing a crawl space with a ground-bearing floor | DKK 105/m² | DKK 85/m² |
| Eligible façade, roof or secondary-glazing window work | DKK 680/m² | DKK 545/m² |
| New water-based heating distribution | DKK 80/m² of heated area | DKK 60/m² |
| Heat-recovery ventilation: BBR residential categories 140–160 | DKK 55/m² of heated area | DKK 40/m² |
| Heat-recovery ventilation: BBR categories 110–132, 185 and 190 | DKK 10,000 per eligible system | DKK 8,000 |
The first rate column includes private owners and businesses that do not deduct VAT on the project. For ventilation, categories 140–160 cover apartment buildings, student residences and residential institutions. Other listed residential categories use the system rate: the manual allows one system per dwelling for codes 130–132, but normally one per building for codes 110–122 and 185 and for code 190 with no more than 300 m² applied-for ventilated area. A system split into several ventilation units is not automatically several grants.
Private building owners receiving a DKK 5,000–10,000 renovation grant can also receive DKK 750 towards the energy certificate. They must have paid for it and normally apply within 24 months from the certificate’s validity start. There is an exception where an earlier timely application did not receive an award. You must not previously have received support under this regulation for the same energy certificate. The certificate must not have been legally required—for example by a sale—from its validity start through project completion.
The same funded renovation project cannot also receive support under other legislation, including the green tradesperson tax deduction, or the energy companies’ energy-saving scheme. Where the property is rented out or used for business, EU de minimis rules apply: this grant and other relevant small-aid awards must together stay within €300,000 over three years, counting connected businesses under the applicable rules. A private landlord must subtract the grant from improvement costs before calculating any rent increase and inform tenants.
Eligibility
You must own the qualifying building. Eligible owners include private individuals and private partnerships, housing cooperatives, apartment-owner associations, companies, associations, foundations and self-governing institutions, and social housing providers. Partnerships (I/S) belong to the private-owner category; they are excluded from the separate company category. Municipal, regional and state institutions cannot receive this grant. The building must be registered in Denmark’s BBR property register as year-round housing; holiday homes do not qualify. If you have bought the building but title registration is pending, provide the signed purchase agreement and proof of the deposit; foreclosure purchases require the corresponding court documents and payment evidence. For apartments, the owner of the overall registered property is the building owner for this purpose.
Use the latest valid energy certificate, based on an on-site assessment, no more than 10 years old and rated D, E, F or G. Its data must still represent the relevant building parts, ventilated or heated area and heating system. Changes affecting those data or the energy rating require a corrected or new certificate before applying. An eligible address alone does not make every square metre eligible.
The technical conditions select poorly performing parts of the building and require a specified improvement. U-values measure heat loss: a lower value means better insulation. Your installer’s product documentation must establish the following:
- Walls: before-work U-value at least 0.30 W/m² K; insulate externally with at least 190 mm mineral wool or equivalent, or demonstrate a final U-value no more than 0.18. Cavity walls and external basement walls are excluded.
- Roofs and lofts: before-work U-value at least 0.30; finish with at least 300 mm mineral wool or equivalent.
- Ground-bearing floors: before-work U-value at least 0.26; finish with at least 300 mm mineral wool, polystyrene or equivalent. Converting a crawl space to this type of floor qualifies; insulating a basement floor or merely insulating the crawl space does not.
- Windows: the existing window must have U-value at least 2.0 and serve the heated part of the building. New façade windows need a reference-window Uw no more than 0.76 and Eref at least 6 kWh/m²/year. Roof windows need Eref at least 20. Eref measures the window’s annual energy balance, including solar heat gains; not every class-A window meets these grant thresholds. New window openings are excluded.
- Secondary glazing or coupled-frame windows: the inner glazing needs Ug no more than 1.2 and solar-energy transmission g at least 0.5; single glazing is insufficient. New secondary frames can improve existing eligible windows.
- Ventilation: replace natural ventilation or mechanical extraction without heat recovery. The new balanced system must meet BR 18 building rules, have at least 80% dry-temperature heat-recovery efficiency and cover at least 75% of the heated gross area approved for habitation. The agency may waive the 75% minimum after an individual assessment.
- Water-based heating: no water-based distribution system may already be installed. The project replaces electric radiators or warm-air heating and converts the heat supply to an electric heat pump or district heating. The grant covers distribution, not purchase of the heat pump itself.
Do not accept a binding quotation, order materials, start work or otherwise make the investment irreversible before the agency awards the grant. Merely submitting the application is not enough. You may obtain quotations and the energy certificate beforehand. A business with a valid CVR registration must carry out and invoice the work; DIY projects do not qualify. You may buy materials yourself after the award and keep the required invoices and payment evidence.

The 2026 intake opened on 27 January and is currently open. Applications close when funds are exhausted, and no later than 30 November 2026 at 23:55 Danish time. Complete applications are processed in receipt order; the portal can close while an application is still being prepared.
Check the building’s BBR record and current energy certificate, then apply through Statens Tilskudspuljer using MitID. Select the measures and eligible areas, attach ownership or representative-authorisation documents where needed, and submit the signed declaration. If a business is registered at the address or any economic activity takes place there—including rental activity—attach the de minimis declaration and disclose relevant aid and VAT deduction. If the energy certificate covers other buildings too, provide the other owners’ authorisation and identify the data for your building. The agency can authorise another submission method for people unable to use the digital portal.
After the award, arrange the work and retain the contractor’s technical evidence. Complete and pay for every measure for which you claim support, then apply for payment within one year of the award unless the award sets another deadline. Invoices must identify the contractor, owner, address, materials/work and start/end dates, with eligible and other work separated. Supply payment proof and measure-specific evidence such as insulation thickness, areas and window or ventilation specifications. Grants of DKK 500,000 or more require accounts audited by an approved auditor; smaller grants require all invoices and payment records. Approved payment goes to the owner’s NemKonto.
Apply before the existing deadline if you need an extension; this route becomes available when less than six months remain. Extensions are normally six months at a time and require agency approval. For material changes to the supported measures, submit a technically justified request and wait for the agency’s change decision before starting the affected work. Minor changes, such as carrying out fewer measures or reducing the area, do not require a change request; the grant is recalculated when you claim payment. A change cannot increase the awarded amount. An ownership transfer can be requested with both parties’ signatures and the new owner’s aid information. Report other material changes: non-compliance can reduce or cancel the grant and trigger repayment.
