Hometown Energy Savers commercial and industrial incentives
Grants help commercial and industrial electricity customers fund tailored equipment upgrades that permanently reduce electricity use.
Ez a lehetőség jelenleg angolul érhető el.
This page covers the custom-project route of Hometown Energy Savers. It supports energy-saving work outside the programme’s fixed equipment rebate schedules, such as an industrial process improvement or chiller replacement.
The payment is $0.10 for each kilowatt-hour of electricity saved in the first year. Custom incentives are capped at $100,000 per electric meter each calendar year. The combined annual cap for custom and fixed-schedule incentives is $250,000 per customer, subject to available funds. Exceeding the annual incentive cap requires BWL authorization.
Payment cannot exceed 100% of eligible project costs. These can include materials, sales tax, external labour, permits, equipment rental and disposal; your own staff’s labour is excluded. For non-lighting work, replacing operational equipment uses its removal and replacement cost. Upgrading equipment that no longer operates uses the extra cost of choosing high-efficiency equipment over standard-efficiency equipment.
Funding is first come, first served and may end when funds run out. Incentive amounts and offerings may change or end at BWL’s discretion.
Eligibility
- You must be a Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) commercial or industrial electric customer in good standing. The facility must be in BWL’s service territory and have a commercial or industrial electric meter or rate code. The equipment must permanently reduce electricity consumption.
- Equipment must be new or fitted with new retrofit components. Used or refurbished equipment is excluded. Follow the application’s equipment specifications and applicable laws. Replaced equipment must be removed or permanently disconnected; removed materials must be taken out of service and disposed of under local rules, and replaced equipment cannot be resold.
- Savings from reducing peak electricity demand (peak shaving or demand limiting), generating power, renewable energy or changing operating schedules do not qualify. The general minimum planned use is 1,800 hours a year for lighting and 1,500 hours for other equipment unless otherwise specified; the terms provide an exception for the custom programme.
- For custom lighting, the worksheet recommends ENERGY STAR or DesignLights Consortium qualified fixtures and retrofit systems. These are product-efficiency qualification lists to check when selecting equipment.
- The same equipment cannot receive more than one incentive from this programme. You also cannot apply for or receive incentives for the same product, equipment or service from multiple utilities unless it saves both electricity and gas.
- Keep the equipment installed and operating for its rated life or three years after receiving payment, whichever is longer. Removing it, replacing it with less efficient equipment, or leaving BWL as a customer during the three-year period triggers repayment of a proportion of the incentive based on how long it was installed. Repay within 30 days of BWL’s notice.

Apply using the 2026 Custom Projects Incentive Application. Send the customer, job-site and contractor information, relevant custom worksheet, an itemised quote with model numbers and available external labour costs, and product specification sheets to hometown@slipstreaminc.org or fax (608) 646-7682. For help, call (800) 573-3503. Obtain the reservation letter before starting work; BWL may inspect the site before or after installation.
For non-lighting work, describe the project and supply clear, step-by-step annual electricity-savings calculations in an unlocked spreadsheet, including documented assumptions, inputs and units.
Complete the project and submit final documents within 90 days or by the reservation letter’s date. Equipment must be installed and operating by 31 December 2026. Submit final paperwork within 30 calendar days after completion and no later than 31 December 2026. Ask early if you need more time; extension requests must be written and require the programme manager’s approval.
