Counteract One invests at pre-seed and seed stage: the earliest stages of financing for a young company. The fund provides money in return for an ownership share in your company (equity). Its typical first investment is $250,000–$1 million.
Carbon dioxide removal captures CO2 from the atmosphere and stores it for decades to millennia. The fund covers both new and established approaches, including direct air capture, mineralisation, biomass carbon storage, and restoring forests and soils.
Eligibility
- Your company must be at pre-seed or seed stage. Counteract backs founders worldwide.
- The solution must be able to change how removal happens at a planetary scale, with Counteract’s support accelerating that change. It must have a credible path to delivering or enabling removal of 0.5 gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent by 2050. That is 500 million tonnes, expressed on a common basis for comparing greenhouse gases. The criterion includes solutions that make removal possible for others, as well as those that remove gases themselves.
- Your solution must add something new and impactful to carbon removal, with a viable long-term business model that can grow as demand accelerates.
- The removal pathway must be responsible and regenerative. It must not excuse emissions that could be avoided; Counteract also values other environmental and social benefits.
- The offer invests in early-stage companies and excludes financing the development of individual removal projects. Counteract describes a separate project-financing vehicle as a future plan. Developing a company’s removal technology is different: for example, its equity investment in PyroCCS funds further technology development and advancement of the company’s projects.
- Later-stage companies are excluded. The fund does not invest in decarbonisation outside CO2 and other greenhouse-gas removal, broader decarbonisation, or emissions-avoidance offsets.
