Green-roof grant

Gemeente NieuwegeinPaesi Bassifino a 1,5K EUR

Grants cover part of green-roof installation costs for residents, schools, owners’ associations and housing associations in Nieuwegein.

Questa opportunità è attualmente disponibile in inglese.

The grant helps pay for roofs planted with vegetation to retain rainwater and cool the city. It reimburses up to 50% of eligible materials, labour and VAT: up to €1,500 per application for homes, or €10,000 for schools, owners’ associations (VvEs) and housing associations. The latter can include several roofs in one application, each meeting the 6 m² minimum.

Roof-structure alterations, application administration, permit costs, gravel, leaf guards, dividing profiles and transport are excluded.

Eligibility

  • You must own the Nieuwegein property or rent it with the owner’s permission. Office and business premises are excluded. Tenants and users of municipal property are excluded, except school boards.
  • The existing building must be registered in the Dutch addresses and buildings register (BAG). Each roof must have at least 6 m² of continuous planted area and retain at least 25 litres of water per m². Installation must comply with building rules. Any required structural alteration permit must already be granted; for a listed building or protected cityscape, a green roof visible from the street requires the relevant permit.
  • Complete and pay for the work before applying. Apply within 12 weeks of completion, measured from the final invoice date. The same roof cannot have received this subsidy before.
  • Schools and social-housing complexes are excluded where an adopted decision, maintenance plan, investment programme or other written intention envisages demolition, replacement construction or major renovation within ten years.
  • The municipality may refuse funding if you already have sufficient own or third-party funds. General refusal grounds also cover insufficient local benefit or policy fit, inadequate organisational or financial continuity, duplicated or poorly coordinated activity, profit-making purposes, disproportionate costs, promotion of political or religious views, unlawful support and insufficient municipal funding. The municipality must refuse aid ruled incompatible with EU law, and applications subject to an outstanding European Commission order to recover unlawful Dutch aid. For businesses, it must also refuse aid that breaches the applicable EU framework because the business is classed as being in difficulty or the subsidy lacks the required incentive effect. Statutory integrity checks can also lead to refusal.

Include a roof photo, a scaled overhead plan showing location and dimensions, an invoice showing materials, labour, planted area and water retention, and proof of payment. Include owner permission and required permits where applicable. You may install the roof yourself: provide receipts for the materials and your payment/account details. Cash payments to an installer require their written confirmation.

Applications are considered in receipt order until the budget is exhausted. The municipal page’s balance dated 15 September 2026 is €3,614.22 for residents and €20,000 for schools, VvEs and housing associations; this is not a reservation of funds. The 2026 green-roof and green-facade budgets are shared.

Follow any conditions and reporting instructions in the award. For awards above €5,000, general rules require a final-settlement application with activity and financial reports, normally within 12 weeks after activities, or by 1 April of the following year for an annual grant, unless the scheme or award sets another arrangement. Notify the municipality promptly in writing of problems meeting obligations and relevant organisational, financial or legal changes, and cooperate with checks, including access to accounts. An award may specify compensation for assets built up through the subsidy; the rules exempt an approved successor continuing the activities with assets and liabilities transferred at book value.
