Solar preheating grant
Grants for Énergir customers in Quebec to install solar collectors that preheat air or water and reduce natural gas use in businesses, institutions, industry and buildings with at least four homes.

Solar thermal collectors capture heat from the sun to preheat air or water for spaces or processes. They must connect to equipment running on natural gas.
The grant is CAD 3 per cubic metre of natural gas saved, up to CAD 200,000 per gas account and 75% of eligible investment costs. Requests below CAD 5,000 are ineligible. Submit separate applications for separate gas accounts. Prepare the project budget before taxes; Énergir may review eligible costs.
The simple payback period compares the project cost with the annual financial savings, without assuming energy-price changes. Projects that pay for themselves in less than one year before the grant, or take more than 20 years without it, are ineligible. After the grant, payback must still be at least one year; Énergir reduces the grant if necessary to keep it at that threshold.
Declare other assistance received or expected for the same project from energy distributors or government bodies. Énergir adjusts its payment for those contributions so that you pay at least 25% of project costs.
Eligibility
- You must be a current or prospective Énergir customer for a project within its Quebec gas-service area. Commercial, institutional and industrial projects qualify, as do multi-housing buildings with at least four units. Prospective customers receive payment only after their gas account is established.
- Natural gas must be the project building’s primary heating energy. Solar collectors must connect to gas equipment, such as ventilation, a hot-water system, a boiler or an industrial process.
- Use solar collectors certified to CAN/CSA-F378 or SRCC STANDARD 100 and consult Énergir’s eligible-collector list. Install them as specified in the SRCC certificate.
- A professional responsible for estimates and quotes must use RETScreen Expert to simulate the design and provide its computer files. If your design includes destratification fans or ducts to redistribute indoor air, simulate those savings in RETScreen too. Supply detailed drawings showing collector dimensions, positioning and connection to the backup heating system where applicable.
- For perforated glazed collectors on a brick base, gross savings are multiplied by 0.6 if the building’s main activity is limited to one shift per day.

Email Énergir’s Energy Efficiency Department at energyefficiency@energir.com before work starts. Use Form Ia for solar air preheating or Form Ib for solar water preheating, with RETScreen Expert simulation results and computer files, estimates and quotes, and detailed system drawings. Incomplete applications are not assessed.
Énergir sends its acceptance or refusal in writing. After acceptance, purchase and install the system. You have one year from acceptance of the financial-assistance offer to complete the project; notify Énergir if you cannot meet that timeframe, as it may refuse late payment. Send the payment request within one year of the application-acceptance letter, using Form IIa for air or Form IIb for water.
The installed system must match the simulation. Report any changed parameters in the payment request; Énergir may suspend payment while required modifications are implemented. Include photographs of system components and the collectors’ surroundings, detailed work invoices and your invoice to Énergir claiming the grant with applicable GST and QST. Registered beneficiaries must include the relevant tax registration details. Declare other financial assistance again with the payment request.
Énergir may inspect within 12 months after completion. If the system was not installed, you must immediately repay the grant. False declarations may also lead to full repayment. The grant’s conditions may change or the grant may end without notice.
