Clean Fuels Fund
Project grants for businesses and community-connected organisations to study, demonstrate or adopt cleaner fuels in Nova Scotia.
Denne finansieringsmuligheten er foreløpig beskrevet på engelsk.
The 2024–25 round supported feasibility studies, clean-fuel pilots and demonstrations in existing facilities, and new infrastructure for producing, storing, distributing or using clean fuels. Examples include hydrogen, renewable natural gas, biofuels and clean wood energy.
Grants were capped at CAD 1 million per project. Projects worth up to and including CAD 500,000, excluding taxes, could receive up to 75% of project costs; larger projects could receive up to 50%. Combined federal and provincial funding, including this fund, could cover no more than 75% of eligible costs. Non-cash (in-kind) contributions could account for no more than 10% of project costs.
Eligibility
These conditions apply to the closed 2024–25 round.
- Private businesses, municipalities, universities and colleges, First Nations communities, and non/not-profit organisations with community-connected projects could apply. Non/not-profits had to be registered with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies.
- The lead applicant had to be incorporated, registered or based in Nova Scotia. Partners could be based elsewhere in Canada or internationally. Projects had to benefit clean-fuel adoption in Nova Scotia; work could partly take place elsewhere, but the fund only covered eligible expenses within the province.
- Projects had to materially advance the provincial climate plan or the fund’s objectives. The primary project objective had to increase Nova Scotia’s capacity to produce, adopt and transition to clean fuels.
- Applicants had to disclose other anticipated or secured federal and provincial funding, including pending applications. Proposal preparation costs were the applicant’s responsibility, and costs incurred before signing the contribution agreement were not reimbursed.
Community partnerships and support for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility were viewed favourably in selection.

- Historical 2024–25 intake; closed.[^c11][^c12]
The 2024–25 intake closed on 15 October 2024.
For that round, applicants emailed a searchable PDF or DOC proposal to cff@novascotia.ca. The application was limited to 25 pages; supporting documents could be attached in other formats. The department confirmed receipt by email.
The proposal needed seven clearly identified sections: organisational information; project description; outcomes and environmental, economic and social benefits; information sharing; project plan; detailed budget and funding; and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility. Applicants supplied incorporation or registration evidence, identified partners, set out their milestones and risks, explained how findings would be shared, and showed annual expenditures for years running 1 April to 31 March, with costs divided among partners. They also explained how the project team and design considered impacts on equity-seeking communities.
Successful applicants entered a contribution agreement with the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, which administered the 2024–25 round. Use the official Clean Fuels Fund page to check for any newly announced intake.
