Research for a competitive and sustainable battery value chain

Swedish Energy AgencyZwedentot 10 mln. SEKgesloten

Grants for battery research and skills development that strengthen Swedish competitiveness, resource efficiency, secure energy supply and the climate transition.

Deze mogelijkheid is momenteel in het Engels beschikbaar.

This research call supports Sweden’s role in a sustainable European battery value chain. It focuses on relatively early-stage technology, scientific knowledge and research capacity in collaboration with industry. It covers the programme’s full breadth, including battery materials and chemistry, production, reuse and recycling, safety, modelling, system studies and policy analysis.

Four areas are particularly sought: more efficient production processes and materials, including AI and digital tools; resilient access to raw materials and components, including recycled materials; solid-state batteries with commercial potential; and scaling recycling processes for battery types expected to reach market within ten years. Collaboration with internationally leading researchers or companies is encouraged. The call’s table identifies preferred countries by research area, without restricting all applications to those countries or four topics. Where proposals otherwise rank equally, the sought topics and approaches receive priority.

Projects are encouraged to analyse market and customer needs, manufacturing readiness and scaling, value-chain resilience, environmental and economic performance, energy and material flows, recyclability and relevant regulation. These cross-cutting analyses are encouraged rather than mandatory for every proposal.

The published round offers up to SEK 10 million per project from an approximately SEK 70 million total budget. Non-economic work—work outside a market for goods or services—can receive up to 100% of a participant’s eligible costs. For companies, feasibility studies and industrial research have maximum rates of 70%, 60% and 50% for small, medium and large businesses. These mean assessing project potential or gaining new knowledge for products and services. Experimental development, using existing knowledge to develop and test improvements, has rates of 45%, 35% and 25%; routine changes are excluded. Basic research without direct commercial application can receive up to 100%.

Industrial research and experimental development can gain up to 15 percentage points for qualifying collaboration or wide dissemination, with a resulting ceiling of 80% for those categories. Company collaboration must include an SME unless conducted in at least two EU countries, and no company may bear more than 70% of eligible costs. In company–research-organisation collaboration, the research organisation must bear at least 10% of eligible costs and retain the right to publish its own results. Alternatively, results must be widely shared through conferences, publications, open databases or free/open software.

Eligible costs include recorded project staff time, equipment use, building depreciation and land costs, external research, knowledge, patents, consultancy and direct operating costs. Depreciation covers the share of an asset’s cost allocated to project use. Costs must be your own, reasonable, auditable and incurred during the approved period. Unpaid work and recoverable VAT do not qualify. Overheads are shared costs such as general administration, office supplies or IT systems that do not arise directly from the project. Actual overheads are normally capped at 30% of eligible salary costs. Universities and higher-education institutions use their full-cost method. A 45% ceiling on eligible salary costs applies to research organisations constituted as limited companies or partnerships under direct or indirect state legal control, research foundations with one or more government-appointed board members, and government agencies mandated to conduct their own research, excluding universities and higher-education institutions. To qualify, the organisation must receive funding by government decision for independent research and participate through its non-economic activity, such as independent research rather than commissioned research services. Only actual overheads qualify. Economic activity, including commissioned research, must be accounted for separately; project work within that activity uses the ordinary 30% ceiling.

SME innovation support can cover obtaining, validating and defending intellectual property; seconding highly qualified staff from a research organisation or large company into a newly created research and innovation role that does not replace staff; and innovation advice or support services such as testing, certification or specialist facilities. The normal maximum is 50%. Advice and support services can reach 100% if total aid for those services remains at most EUR 220,000 per company over three years. Declare previous aid under this service category. Patent-cost support is capped at SEK 250,000 per project and needs a separate work package; annual patent-office fees are excluded.

You cover the remaining costs and overruns. Another organisation’s unpaid contribution cannot count as your own cost. Report other public or EU funding sought, received or planned for the same costs; combined support must remain within the aid limits. Project parties cannot subcontract each other; separate related-company consultancy can qualify at the supplier’s actual salary cost.

Eligibility

Companies that are legal entities, universities, research institutes and public organisations can apply. The project must contribute to at least one programme outcome: better resource- and cost-efficient batteries, stronger research and industrial skills, sustainable production or recycling, stronger academic–industry networks, international research collaboration or evidence for policy.

The project leader must be a researcher: either someone who has not reached a stable senior academic position or someone employed by the coordinating company. Eligible academic examples include biträdande lektor, postdoctoral and doctoral researchers and other non-senior or temporary roles. The FAQ excludes the stable academic posts professor, biträdande professor and universitetslektor. Company leaders, including leaders at incorporated research institutes, should also be chosen with the call’s aim of developing less-senior researchers and retaining skills in mind. Consider gender equality and diversity in the team and its work.

Funding normally supports Swedish activity. Partners with no activity in Sweden can be funded only if they bring unique expertise unavailable in Sweden, the project is essential to programme goals and knowledge clearly transfers to Swedish actors. The agency can decline even when all conditions are met. All such international partners together may request at most 15% of the project’s total requested grant, not 15% of its costs. If any international partner requests support, the project must include at least six months of international research exchange, prioritising staff working on the project at Swedish partners. Include foreign partners’ own costs and financing, any conditions on that finance and the implications if it fails.

Company-size calculations include linked ownership and control. Small businesses have fewer than 50 staff and turnover or balance-sheet total at most EUR 10 million. Medium-sized businesses have fewer than 250 staff and turnover at most EUR 50 million or balance-sheet total at most EUR 43 million. Use the latest approved accounts and the two-consecutive-year threshold rules; working owners and dependent consultants count as staff.

For this round, projects can start no earlier than 1 September 2026 and must end by 31 December 2030.

The published round opened on 27 February and closed on 7 May 2026 at 23:59 Swedish time. Decisions were planned during June–September 2026.

Apply through Mina sidor’s “Finansiering av forskning, innovation och affärsutveckling” service under the call’s Swedish title, “Forskning för en konkurrenskraftig och hållbar batterivärdekedja”. Request authority to represent the coordinator, which receives and distributes the grant, a few days in advance. Deadline-day support ends at 16:00.

Describe the project in the form. Attach the project leader’s and key people’s CVs, each at most one A4 page, and any figures or images referred to in the text. Attachments should complement the form, not repeat it or replace its project description. Put patent and intellectual-property activities in a separate work package and provide the previous innovation-service aid declaration where relevant.

Assessment covers programme relevance, scientific excellence and innovation, feasibility, and use and sharing of results. Explain your work plan, milestones, budget, team, equality considerations and knowledge transfer. Experts advise the agency, which may balance its portfolio and request additions or credit information. Decisions and follow-up are handled through Mina sidor.

The first progress report must include a deeper review of the relevant state of knowledge using the template supplied with the award. This review will be public, so use only public or non-confidential information. Each funded project must send at least one partner to programme conferences and activities, expected once or twice a year; participation costs are eligible.

Awardees follow the decision’s payment and reporting schedule and seek approval for project changes. Each participant awarded at least SEK 3 million by the agency needs a certificate from an authorised or approved auditor covering that participant at final reporting. Municipalities, regions, government agencies, universities and higher-education institutions may use an internal auditor. The agency can also require a certificate for a participant below this threshold. Payments may be withheld until 90% of earlier payments have been used. Return unused funds; incorrect awards or breached conditions may lead to recovery, with interest on unlawful state aid.
