10.000 Grüne Dächer
A €50-per-square-metre grant for private property owners adding a green roof in the eligible Emscher-Lippe catchments.
Deze mogelijkheid is momenteel in het Engels beschikbaar.
Add plants to an existing sewer-connected roof to retain rainwater. This entry covers extensive green roofs—low-growing planting rather than a walkable roof garden—with a combined covered roof footprint below 200 m² on one property. You can do the work yourself or use a contractor. The grant pays €50 per square metre of planted roof; you cover any additional costs.
The grant is paid after completion. The plants must visibly be established: a newly seeded bare surface is not yet a completed green roof. There is no entitlement to funding; the responsible association decides within its available budget. The €2,000 minimum grant threshold for other rainwater measures does not apply to this simplified roof procedure.
Eligibility
- You must own the property. Its roof must be in the Emschergenossenschaft or Lippeverband catchment; in the Lippeverband area, only municipalities paying contributions qualify. Check the property address using the map on the programme conditions page. This entry covers private properties with a combined roof area below 200 m², excluding windows and roof structures from the covered footprint.
- The roof must already be connected to a sewer. Its green-roof build-up must be at least 10 cm, or the manufacturer must specify water storage of at least 25 litres per m².
- Wait for the award before starting. Buying DIY consumable materials or commissioning construction counts as starting; planning services do not. A roof required by law or a planning condition is excluded, as is renovation of an existing natural rainwater-management installation. The measure must not be fundable through the NRW KRIS programme.
- Do not receive another programme’s funding for the same work. Funding for separate measures may be combined. You must not pass the subsidised portion of costs directly or indirectly to tenants.
- Maintain and operate the green roof for ten years from notifying completion. Upload a photograph every five years. Agree to announced inspections of the property and roof and drone overflights, arranged with you in advance. On sale, transfer these duties to the buyer.
- Ending the required use early requires proportional repayment. The association may reclaim all or part of the grant for misuse or other breaches; repayment generally bears annual interest at three percentage points above the base rate from the recovery request.

- Awards depend on available funds and the responsible association’s discretion.
Register in the Klima.Werk funding portal using a computer or laptop, then submit your application there. Have all pages of your current rainwater-fee notice, the roof area, the owner’s bank details and a current photograph of the unplanted roof ready. Upload the mapped roof-area PDF used to establish the footprint. The programme currently has no application deadline.
Wait for the portal award before buying materials or commissioning construction. Complete the work within three years, starting with the month of the award. An extension may be granted for justified reasons; request it in writing or by email at least three months before that period ends. Notify the responsible association of construction start and completion in writing or by email, and report changes to the type of work immediately because they can affect the grant.
After the plants visibly establish, request payment in the portal with before-and-after photographs and a clear calculation of the planted area. Use the programme’s support contact, hallo@klima-werk.de, for application assistance.
