Rural Energy for America Program Grants
Grants for US agricultural producers and rural small businesses buying renewable-energy systems or making energy-efficiency improvements.

Install commercially available renewable energy such as solar, wind, biomass, geothermal or small hydropower, or improve insulation, heating, cooling, refrigeration, lighting and irrigation motors.
Renewable-energy grants range from $2,500 to $1 million. Energy-efficiency grants range from $1,500 to $500,000.
A grant can cover up to 50% of eligible costs through any one of these separate routes:
- the project is an energy-efficiency improvement;
- it is a renewable-energy system or retrofit that produces no carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide or fluorinated gases at project level;
- its project site is in an “Energy Community”, a geographic area defined in federal tax law and determined by the US Treasury; or
- it is proposed by an eligible Tribal corporation or other Tribal business entity under the programme rules.
All other projects are limited to 25%.
Eligibility
An agricultural producer must receive at least half of gross income from agricultural operations. A small business must meet federal size standards and normally locate its project in a rural area with no more than 50,000 residents. An agricultural producer may locate an on-site production project outside a rural area.
Every project must have technical merit, use commercially available technology and complete environmental review before award or construction. An energy-efficiency application also needs a compliant energy audit or energy assessment.
If you apply for a grant only, you must provide matching funds for the share of costs that the grant does not cover.
You must not have overdue federal taxes or debts, unfulfilled obligations under federal judgments, or a debarment from federal assistance.

USDA is not accepting REAP grant applications now. To prepare an application, first contact the USDA Rural Development Energy Coordinator in your state. Register in the System for Award Management and obtain a Unique Entity ID before submitting the forms for your project-cost band.
