Grant to replace an old renewable heater with district heating in Styria

Private owners and other eligible household applicants in Styria can receive a grant to replace an old biomass boiler or heat pump with a district-heating connection.

Esta oportunidade está atualmente disponível em inglês.

This page covers the climate-friendly district-heating connection option under Styria’s renewable-heater replacement programme. It supports replacement of a biomass boiler or heat pump that is at least 15 years old on the application date, in an existing one- or two-family house or terraced house.

The grant is up to €1,000, capped at 30% of evidenced eligible investment costs. Eligible costs include connection equipment and installation, and dismantling and disposal of the old heater. Heat storage, heat distribution, connecting pipes, heat-source installations and accompanying building work are excluded.

Eligibility

  • Apply as a private individual acting outside business activity. You must own the house, be its principal tenant (the main tenant under the tenancy agreement), hold a registered right to use it, or hold building rights. The house must be in Styria and used predominantly as a private residence; you do not need to have your main residence there.
  • The connection must improve final energy efficiency. Its rated heat output must match the house’s heating load, stay at or below 100 kW, and not exceed the old system’s output. It must serve only the house, with no supply to outbuildings. Use water-based central heating and insulated connecting pipes in the heating room.
  • This entry covers connections to a climate-friendly district-heating network. A climate-friendly network supplies at least 50% renewable energy, 75% heat from combined heat and power, or 50% from a combination of these. Land Steiermark publishes the qualifying networks.
  • Use only new components. A legally authorised company must install and hand over the connection and confirm successful commissioning. Decommission and professionally dispose of the old system, every secondary heater and any fuel tanks, with proof.
  • The house must not have received support for the same purpose from Styria’s environmental fund or housing support in the previous 15 years.
  • Only one application is allowed for the new connection, including when it replaces several heaters. No other Land Steiermark department or Landwirtschaftskammer Steiermark (Styria’s Chamber of Agriculture) grant may support the same system. Other funders may contribute, but total grants must not exceed project investment costs. Simultaneously replacing a fossil-fuel heater and a renewable heater is excluded, so this grant cannot be combined with the federal Kesseltausch grant for one- or two-family or terraced houses.

  • Applications close earlier if funding is exhausted. The official page reported 27% of the budget available on 6 October 2026.[^c2][^c3]

Apply through the “Online-Antragsformular” on the Land Steiermark programme page before delivery, installation, invoicing or payment. Submit a copy of valid official photo ID, a complete quotation showing connection output, connection costs, heat-transfer station, integration into the heating system, excavation and heat-supply contract, and photos of the old heater with a legible identification plate.

After checking the application, the Land sends confirmation with a reference number and reserves funding for nine months. Within nine months of that allocation, complete the work and request payment through the completion notification. Submit the supplied completion form and signed confirmation sheet, commissioning report, invoices in your name with payment evidence, photos of the new system including its identification plate and insulated distribution pipes, and a signed heat-supply contract. Invoices must show connection costs, the heat-transfer station, integration into the heating system, excavation, old-system disposal, and required calculations and documentation. The authority may request more documents. Payment depends on meeting all programme conditions.

Keep the submitted evidence, original invoices and payment records for seven calendar years after carrying out the measure, and operate the funded system properly for ten calendar years. Allow inspections, report changed circumstances, and legally transfer the obligations to successors; notify the Land in writing within 14 days of a legally effective transfer.

Repayment can be required for false information, missing evidence, sale or decommissioning of the funded system, or contractual obligations still unmet one month after a warning. For a quantifiable partial failure to provide evidence, recovery is proportional. Repayment is due within 14 days of a demand, with interest of three percentage points above the Austrian National Bank base rate from the first payment. Insolvency, rejection of an insolvency petition for insufficient assets, or compulsory administration stops payments before implementation; money already paid becomes repayable unless you demonstrate that implementation remains secured.
