4impact invests in software startups and becomes a shareholder: the company receives capital in exchange for ownership. Its initial investments range from €250,000 to €2.5 million, with capital reserved for potential later investments. The investor also monitors financial and impact performance and provides strategic input.

The wider strategy covers both environmental and social outcomes. This entry covers its climate-relevant part, including software for cleaner energy systems and electric-vehicle charging, lower building and industrial energy use, and carbon-removal monitoring. 4impact targets European businesses, particularly the Benelux, Nordics and German-speaking countries in Europe.

Eligibility

The published fit criteria are a positive-impact mission, software development, impact combined with market-rate financial returns, international growth potential, a North-Western European base, and a Seed-to-Series-A fundraising round. These are early stages of developing a product and customer business and preparing it for growth. The manager describes the regional emphasis as its geographical focus.

Impact must be intentional, positive overall and measurable. The company develops a theory of change: an explanation of how its activities lead to the intended environmental or social benefit. During assessment, 4impact examines the additional benefit the solution creates, sets measurable impact indicators and targets, checks that the company’s governing documents align with its mission, and considers environmental, social and governance risks. The investment committee must approve the case.

The company must be able to pursue its positive impact without significantly harming other environmental or social factors. For software businesses, the investor pays particular attention to energy consumed by data processing. Impact indicators suited to the company’s stage are included in corporate documents and periodic reporting, monitored during the investment and revisited when needed.
