WA Residential Battery Scheme
A battery rebate and optional interest-free loan for Western Australian homes that join a scheme coordinating household batteries to support the electricity grid.

The rebate reduces the cost of buying and installing a home battery. Synergy customers receive AUD 130 per kWh of usable storage, up to AUD 1,300; Horizon Power customers receive AUD 380 per kWh, up to AUD 3,800. Only the first 10 kWh counts towards the rebate, but larger batteries can qualify. Approved funds go directly to your accredited vendor, typically as an upfront discount. This state support is in addition to the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
You can also apply for an interest-free loan of AUD 2,001–10,000. Unlike the rebate, you repay this money over 3–10 years. No asset or guarantee is required, and there are no fees other than late fees: AUD 10 for each week in arrears, capped at AUD 120 in each 12-month period starting from settlement. There is no early-repayment fee. The loan cannot exceed the eligible purchase and installation cost after the rebate.
Both forms of support require you to join a Virtual Power Plant (VPP): a service that coordinates household batteries and other energy resources to support the community’s electricity supply.
Eligibility
You must be an Australian permanent resident aged at least 18, be a Synergy or Horizon Power customer, verify your identity and have a supply agreement for eligible equipment.
- The property must be in Western Australia and used mainly as a home. A home business is allowed if residential use remains predominant. An ongoing internet connection is required.
- You can apply for your own main residence, or an investment property leased to a long-term tenant who consents to installation. Renters need their landlord’s prior written consent. Unit-titled homes need all necessary approvals, including from the owners’ corporation.
- Properties majority-owned by government entities under low-income housing schemes are excluded. Properties owned by government entities in other circumstances, telecommunications companies or mining/resources companies are also excluded.
- New, additional and replacement batteries can qualify, with at least 5 kWh of usable capacity. Equipment must appear on the relevant Synergy or Horizon Power supported list and the Clean Energy Council’s approved battery and inverter lists. It must also meet the applicable electricity connection, functionality and installation requirements.
- There is only one rebate per property. Rebates cannot be transferred or claimed retrospectively for systems purchased before 1 July 2025.
- You must enter the applicable VPP contract. Synergy customers can choose Synergy or an alternative supplier meeting WA Government criteria; eligible alternatives are listed by Energy Policy WA. Horizon Power customers must join Horizon Power’s VPP.
For the loan, household gross annual income must be below AUD 210,000, verified through tax-return evidence. This income limit is a loan condition, not a rebate condition.

Use the official scheme page to find accredited battery vendors and approved product lists. Get quotes, choose an approved vendor and eligible equipment, and tell the vendor whether you also want the loan. The vendor submits the application for you; Plenti, the scheme’s third-party administrator, contacts loan applicants.
The scheme allows a six-month window for the application, conditional approval and installation process. If that period expires, you must reapply for the rebate or loan before installation.
Applications are open, with rebates available until all 100,000 planned rebates have been distributed.
