Energy efficiency loan
Borrow for insulation, solar panels and other energy-efficient home improvements as an eligible member of the UN community.
Această oportunitate este disponibilă momentan în limba engleză.
UNFCU lends US dollars for home projects that improve energy efficiency. Your service provider must document that the project is energy efficient, and UNFCU pays the approved money directly to the provider. You repay the borrowed money plus interest through consistent monthly payments.
You can request USD 500–150,000 over six months to 15 years. The fixed annual percentage rate (APR) starts at 8.00%; your actual rate depends on creditworthiness, UN contract type, loan amount and term. A fixed rate stays the same for the life of the loan. Shorter terms generally mean lower rates and higher monthly payments. No collateral or down payment is required, and there are no application fees, origination fees or penalties for early repayment.
Approval can be for less than you request. Members without a home loan can have no more than USD 150,000 in total unsecured borrowing, including unused credit lines. This combined limit can rise to USD 225,000 if you have or are applying for a UNFCU international home loan; it does not increase this product’s USD 150,000 maximum.
If you leave the UN system, tell UNFCU promptly. It may apply all or part of your final entitlement payment from the UN to your outstanding debt and will discuss your options with you.
Eligibility
You must be a UNFCU member aged 18 or older with all accounts in good standing. Keep your USD 25 Membership Share fully funded and stay within credit card and credit-line limits. In the previous 12 months, more than one late payment on a single loan or card, or more than two across all loans and cards, prevents good standing. The same thresholds apply to payments returned for insufficient funds on one deposit account or across all deposit accounts.
Membership is open to UN and affiliated-agency employees and retirees, including the World Bank and IMF. Eligible UN consultants and volunteers need a contract lasting at least six months, or evidence of six consecutive months of ongoing engagement if their contracts are shorter. Country sanctions and political or civil instability can restrict their membership.
Membership also covers a member’s spouse, parents, children (including adopted children, stepchildren and children under legal guardianship), grandchildren, grandparents and siblings, plus people permanently sharing the member’s household and finances. A member who joined through family cannot invite further family members. Relationship proof and country restrictions apply. Other eligible groups include UNA-USA employees and members, UN International School employees, students and their families, and employees of the UN Child Care Center, UN Foundation, US Fund for UNICEF, USA for UNHCR, WFUNA, Gavi, the NATO Liaison Office to the UN in New York, OSCE and permanent missions to the UN in New York. Asian Development Bank employees and retirees also qualify. Use UNFCU’s membership application to check other partner organizations.
Loan eligibility depends on your employment, income, existing debts, expenses, payment history, membership length, employment country and income currency. The main eligible groups are:
- UN retirees receiving a pension in USD or a currency stable against USD, and UN Professional or Field Service staff paid in such a currency.
- UN National Professional Officers and General Service staff employed by the UN for at least six consecutive months, with monthly payroll deposits to a UNFCU account and at least three consecutive deposits received.
- Members who joined through UNA-USA or KI USA and hold a UNFCU US mortgage, or have been UNFCU members for at least 12 months.
- Other members earning Australian dollars, Canadian dollars, Danish kroner, euros, Hong Kong dollars, Israeli new shekels, Japanese yen, New Zealand dollars, Norwegian kroner, Panamanian balboas, pounds sterling, Singapore dollars, Swedish kronor, Swiss francs or US dollars. The 12-month membership requirement still applies to UNA-USA and KI USA members without a UNFCU US mortgage. The published FAQs also describe an assessment route for families of UN Professional and Field Service staff or retirees, and for General Service staff, National Professional Officers, UN consultants and their families; income stability and country risk still matter.
Unsecured loans are unavailable to National Professional Officers and General Service staff in Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia and Syria. They may also be unavailable to members employed in UN missions or agencies planning to close or reduce staffing.
US sanctions can restrict accounts and transactions based on your location or nationality. Consultants and volunteers engaged in sanctioned countries cannot join. UNFCU has limited authorizations for actively employed UN staff in Iran, active and retired UN staff and their immediate families in Cuba, and active and retired Cuban UN staff outside Cuba. These account authorizations do not waive the loan restrictions above.

Family and household applicants also need the existing member’s number and date of birth and proof of the relationship or shared household finances. Asian Development Bank employees and retirees need a certificate of employment or pension and the ADB UNFCU Undertaking form, completed and physically signed.
Apply through UNFCU Digital Banking: sign in, open Account Services and select Apply for a Loan or Credit Card. The product page invites online applications at any time from anywhere in the world. Select your loan term; UNFCU may propose another term after assessing your monthly repayment capacity.
Prepare income verification, your two most recent pay statements, a certificate of residency such as a land title or lease agreement, and signed, dated cost estimates on contractor letterhead showing your name and the property address. Your service provider must confirm the energy efficiency of the project. After approval, UNFCU requests a wire transfer form payable to the vendor or service provider. It may require additional documents to assess your application.
