Business sustainability loan
Variable-rate term loans for businesses and farms buying qualifying energy-saving equipment, lower-carbon vehicles or other environmental and social improvements.
Această oportunitate este disponibilă momentan în limba engleză.
You can borrow through an ASB Business Term Loan or Asset Finance Term Loan for qualifying sustainability improvements. Loans start at NZ$25,000, with up to NZ$2 million available across multiple qualifying term loans. You can discuss larger borrowing with ASB. The loan uses ASB’s variable Special Purpose Base Rate, and an additional margin may apply.
Eligible purchases include qualifying solar installations, heat pumps, efficient cooling, insulation, glazing, LED lighting, lower-carbon vehicles and vehicle charging infrastructure. The same product also supports qualifying certified buildings, land and water improvements, waste reduction and social purposes; the conditions differ by activity.
Your business repays a Business Term Loan over an agreed period in regular payments. Variable-rate business term loans allow extra payments without cost. An interest-only arrangement may be available for up to five years within a longer loan term, subject to specific lending criteria and terms. Those payments cover interest calculated on the outstanding principal, rather than reducing the borrowed balance.
Asset Finance Term Loans use new or existing assets as security, with terms matched to the assets’ economic life and flexible payment structures. Depending on your circumstances, ASB may finance up to 100% of the asset purchase price; a no-deposit option is available. These are lending options subject to ASB’s assessment, alongside the sustainability loan’s own eligibility and amount limits.
Standard business term loan fees may apply. The Business Term Loan establishment fee is calculated on the approved limit, at up to 1% with a NZ$25 minimum; the Asset Finance Term Loan establishment fee is negotiated. Asset finance carries a Personal Property Security Registration fee, charged at NZ$25 per security when ASB registers security other than a mortgage; establishment and line fees may also apply. You pay legal costs for documentation and security, plus any required external certification costs and ongoing annual certification fees.
Eligibility
The loan is for business or rural purposes. You must meet ASB’s lending, eligibility and verification criteria and supply evidence and documentation of the funding purpose to ASB’s satisfaction. ASB assesses both your business and the proposed use of the loan. Approval remains at its discretion even when the criteria are met.
- Certified buildings: qualifying commercial buildings and developments, or residential developments. ASB lists minimum ratings of NABERSNZ energy 4 stars, NZGBC non-residential Green Star 4, Green Star Performance 4 or residential Home Star 6, as applicable, and also includes Passive Houses. These routes require the relevant green-building certification; ASB confirms the applicable verification requirements.
- Land and water: qualifying afforestation, reforestation and planting along waterways; biodiversity and ecosystem protection; water efficiency and protection of waterways from pollution. ASB verifies whether the proposed activity qualifies.
- Industrial energy improvements: qualifying efficient or renewable-energy alternatives must reduce the energy use or carbon emissions of industrial processes by at least 30%. Associated planning, consenting and labour can be financed. A separate purchase route covers qualifying energy-efficient products, such as solar installations, heat pumps, chillers, air conditioning, insulation, glazing and LEDs.
- Lower-carbon transport: qualifying electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen-powered vehicles, or electric-vehicle charging infrastructure.
- Waste reduction: qualifying equipment, products or projects that reduce waste, divert it from landfill or reduce carbon emissions. You must already hold, or obtain, a qualifying certification for responsible waste and environmental management.
- Social purposes: essential services for marginalised communities or groups, including education, training, healthcare, financial services and sustainable food systems; affordable or social housing addressing recognised social needs; employment opportunities for marginalised communities; and revitalisation of Te Reo Māori, Tikanga and Te Ao Māori—Māori language, custom and culture.
Some purposes require external certification. ASB can change its verification requirements and eligibility criteria.
