Balcony solar grant
A €150 grant helps adult residents of Kassel buy a new plug-in solar system for their home.
Beskrivningen av den här finansieringen finns för närvarande på engelska.
Buy a plug-in solar system for private use on a property in Kassel city. The modules may have a combined peak output of up to 2,000 Wp and the inverter, which converts the solar power for household use, a combined output of up to 800 VA. The grant is a fixed €150, and can be combined with other public funding.
You must keep the equipment for your own use in Kassel for one year if its net purchase price is up to €1,000, or ten years from €1,000.01. This commitment ends on the day you register a move within or away from Kassel. Selling or renting out the equipment during the commitment can mean repaying the grant in proportion to the remaining period; that rule does not apply when the commitment ends because of a registered move or the recipient dies. The city can check continued use, including by requesting a signed declaration.
Breaking the grant conditions or giving false information can lead to withdrawal of approval. Money already paid must then be repaid within one month of receiving the city’s notice, with annual interest five percentage points above the base interest rate.
Eligibility
- You must be an adult individual who owns or rents a house or flat and has their main registered home (Erstwohnsitz) in Kassel city. Homes in the surrounding Landkreis Kassel are outside the scheme.
- There must not already be a balcony solar system in your household. Funding is available only once per eligible person, dwelling and household.
- Buy a new system only after the grant approval has become legally effective. Second-hand systems, instalment purchases, leasing, systems fixed to the building, and island or off-grid battery systems are excluded. A permanently plugged-in system with a battery can qualify.
- Register the system in the Marktstammdatenregister, Germany’s energy-installation register, after installation. It must operate within Kassel during the own-use commitment.
- If installing panels on a listed building or within a protected heritage ensemble (a group of buildings protected together), you need heritage approval. For a listed building, provide valid approval. You can submit it within four months of applying, but the grant application is not processed until the approval is provided. The city’s application also handles the heritage check using your installation description, marked map and photograph. Other legally required permissions still apply. Tenants should speak to their landlord before installation.
- Under the general city grant rules, the city must have no doubts that you can handle the grant funds properly. Examples of concerns are insolvency or court-supervised debt-settlement proceedings being applied for or opened, overdue proof of use of earlier grants, unresolved issues in earlier grant accounts despite a reminder and deadline, or being unwilling or unable to explain your financial circumstances and need for public funding when asked.
- General city grant rules require appropriate own funds and use of other financing opportunities. Notify the city promptly of financing changes or lower total costs; these may reduce the city’s grant.

- Programme runs in 2024–2026; grant decisions depend on available annual budget and application order.
Apply digitally to the City of Kassel through the “Jetzt Förderantrag stellen” link on the official programme page. Telephone and paper applications are not accepted. The city currently invites applications for the 2024–2026 programme; decisions follow application order and depend on available budget, so the grant is not guaranteed.
Wait for legally effective approval before buying. Within four months of receiving the approval, submit the purchase evidence through the portal: an invoice or purchase contract naming you, the seller, the equipment and its module and inverter power; proof of payment; and proof of Marktstammdatenregister registration. The city pays €150 to the account in the proof-of-use form after checking the documents.
If the city asks you to correct incomplete or unsuitable documents, you have one month. Failure to provide acceptable corrections prevents approval, or may lead to withdrawal if the missing documents concern proof of purchase and use.
