Property flood resilience grant

Essex County CouncilStorbritannien

A grant for homeowners in designated areas of Essex to buy and install protection against flooding; the previous scheme is closed.

Beskrivningen av den här finansieringen finns för närvarande på engelska.

The grant helps protect homes from rainfall and other local flooding. Funded products can include self-closing air bricks, reinforced doors, pumps and flood barriers. These measures respond to flood risk that the council expects climate change to increase.

The previous scheme paid up to £8,000 towards purchasing and installing protection. Homeowners paid any costs above that amount. All recommended measures had to be installed for the property to be considered flood resilient.

Lakeside Flood Solutions managed delivery for the council. Its initial property survey and consultation were free, followed by a quotation and installation if the homeowner chose to proceed. Homeowners could choose British Standard-accredited products from the market and did not have to use only Lakeside products.

Eligibility

The published eligibility rules for the previous scheme required all of the following:

  • You must be a homeowner residing in Essex, excluding Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock.
  • Your home must lie within a designated Critical Drainage Area (CDA), a mapped hotspot at significant flood risk from local water such as ditches, drains, rainfall and surface runoff.
  • You must have experienced flooding inside the home from local water sources, or live in an area at high risk of surface-water flooding.

Flooding in garages, non-habitable spaces, outbuildings and storage facilities did not qualify as internal flooding. Flooding from freshwater leaks was also excluded.

How to apply

The previous scheme is closed. Essex County Council says it aims to relaunch it and will publish updates on its grants overview page.

To check the published location criterion, use the council’s Critical Drainage Area map, find your postcode and address, then select “Critical Drainage Areas” under “Map Categories”. An address inside the orange gridded overlay lies in a CDA; the other homeowner and flooding conditions still apply.

The council also advises checking with your home insurer whether installing flood-protection measures would affect your insurance cost.
