Solar rebate for businesses
A rebate of CAD 0.75 per installed DC watt helps Manitoba businesses add a new solar electricity system sized to their building’s annual use.

The rebate supports a new photovoltaic (PV) system, which generates electricity from sunlight, connected to Manitoba Hydro’s grid. The CAD 0.75 rate uses installed direct-current (DC) wattage, the system’s power rating rather than its yearly electricity production. The rebate cannot exceed the product cost you paid, including taxes.
Efficiency Manitoba checks the completed installation and documents before finalizing payment. Noncompliance, including ceasing to hold the building’s Manitoba Hydro account, can cancel unpaid rebates after notice. A rebate paid while you were in breach must be repaid.
Eligibility
- You must own the building or be its designated representative. It must have its own meter and an active Manitoba Hydro account billed at a commercial general-service electricity rate. You must also be eligible for Manitoba Hydro’s commercial natural-gas rates.
- The system must be used for educational, institutional, commercial, industrial or agricultural purposes. You or your tenant must occupy the building throughout all 12 months; seasonal buildings are excluded.
- Size the system to offset the building’s annual electricity consumption. It cannot replace or add to an existing solar PV system. Only one application is allowed per solar project per building.
- Equipment must be new, owned by you, purchased in Canada and bought through a supplier registered with Efficiency Manitoba. It must meet Canadian Standards Association electrical-safety requirements or be independently certified to those standards.
- Use a designer with the credentials required by the local authority and a registered installer holding an electrical contractor’s licence. Comply with electrical codes, local bylaws and permits. A bidirectional meter, which records electricity flowing both from and to the grid, must be installed.
- New buildings and additions must also participate in Efficiency Manitoba’s New Buildings Program.
- Disclose other public or utility energy-conservation funding for the same equipment. It may make the equipment ineligible unless Efficiency Manitoba agrees otherwise in writing.
How to apply

Choose a registered contractor. The contractor obtains the necessary permits and Manitoba Hydro’s interconnection approval to connect the system to the grid. After that approval, the contractor applies to Efficiency Manitoba on your behalf. Wait for Efficiency Manitoba’s approval before purchasing or installing any part of the system or starting work.
Install and operate the system within 12 months of approval unless Efficiency Manitoba agrees to a different installation deadline in writing. Keep it in place for at least 36 months. Make the site accessible for verification and attend the appointment; give at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to reschedule.
You and your contractor sign the completion declaration and submit paid invoices and required supporting documents. The completed claim must arrive within 90 days after project completion and no later than 12 months after approval. Keep the supporting paperwork and receipts for 24 months from approval. Efficiency Manitoba verifies the claim and finalizes the rebate.
Tell Efficiency Manitoba immediately if application information changes during your participation, including a change of property ownership. Notify it in writing of equipment or ownership changes affecting the original application. These changes can affect eligibility or the rebate amount; failing to report them can make you ineligible.
