Balcony solar grant
A €100 grant per dwelling helps individual landlords, tenants and owners install new plug-in solar equipment in Waltrop.

The grant supports new solar modules and inverters for plug-in systems connected to a household circuit. It normally covers dwellings in buildings with two or more homes. A dwelling must be a structurally separate, self-contained unit with its own access and the facilities needed for an independent household, such as a bathroom.
The payment is €100 per dwelling. You may combine it with other grants only if those schemes allow this, and all grants together must not exceed 50% of total costs. For this ceiling, tax relief, subsidised loans and renewable-electricity feed-in payments do not count as grants. This city grant is tax-free; you remain responsible for checking its compatibility with other support and your own tax treatment. The city does not carry out that check or compensate for reductions in other support.
Eligibility
- You must be an individual landlord, tenant or owner of a dwelling in Waltrop. Buildings used exclusively for business, and exclusively commercial parts of buildings, are excluded.
- The ordinary route covers buildings with two dwellings or at least three dwellings. A single-family home can qualify exceptionally if you prove its roof is unsuitable for rooftop solar.
- The modules must face west, south or east, receive direct sunlight for much of the day and be largely free of shade. Register the device in the Bundesnetzagentur’s Marktstammdatenregister, the national energy-installation register. Only one device per applicant and per dwelling is supported.
- A purchase made before applying is excluded. Planning, building and monument-protection requirements must permit the installation; the award does not replace required permissions, and you must comply with applicable standards and laws.
- Staff of project partners directly involved as Klimafit Ruhr contacts, and members of their households, cannot apply.

Apply to Stadt Waltrop using the prescribed online form in its municipal service portal. Submit a complete application before buying, and follow the city’s instruction to wait for the written award before purchase. Buying after applying but before approval is at your own risk. Applications are considered in order of receipt within the available budget; there is no entitlement to a grant, and the written award may include conditions.
Within three months of the award, send the register confirmation, purchase invoice and a photo of the fully installed device. For a listed building, include monument-protection permission. For a single-family home, also prove roof unsuitability with confirmation from the monument authority or a qualified tradesperson, or an extract from the solar roof cadastre. If you cannot meet the deadline, request an extension in writing with a plausible explanation; the city decides case by case.
Stadt Waltrop pays after checking these documents. It may request extra documents and inspect the installation, including through third parties. It may recover the grant with interest if it is used for a different purpose.
