Investment grant for more competitive farming
Farming, horticulture and reindeer enterprises can receive grants for investments including energy woodland, greenhouses, livestock buildings and lower-ammonia manure storage.
Denne finansieringsmulighed er i øjeblikket beskrevet på engelsk.
You can plant willow, hybrid aspen or poplar on arable land, including buying plants, planting and protective fencing. These energy crops can supply heat or electricity. The broader programme also supports livestock buildings and fixed equipment, greenhouses and growing tunnels, crop drying and storage, reindeer facilities, field drainage and qualifying new technology. Investments that need heating must use renewable energy.
The grant normally covers 30% of eligible expenditure. Applicants aged 40 or younger can receive 40%. In Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Jämtland and Västernorrland, these rates rise to 40% for older applicants and 50% for those aged 40 or younger. New technology that enables innovative sustainable production receives 40%, or 50% for applicants aged 40 or younger in those four northern counties. Reindeer investments are supported only in those four counties and in Gävleborg, Dalarna and Värmland: the rate is 40%, rising to 50% for applicants aged 40 or younger in the four northern counties. Investments reducing ammonia emissions receive 80%.
The main grant ceiling over three years from your first application, counted from 2023 onwards, is SEK 2.4 million in southern Sweden, SEK 3.5 million in Gävleborg, Dalarna and Värmland, and SEK 4.7 million in the four northern counties above. An extra SEK 800,000 is reserved for investments solely reducing ammonia emissions. Drainage and energy woodland share a separate ceiling of SEK 2.4, 3.5 or 4.7 million in the same regions. Reindeer investments in the seven eligible counties above have a SEK 2.4 million ceiling.
For qualifying new livestock buildings, eligible costs must be calculated using fixed amounts per animal place, or per square metre of floor area for cattle deep-litter housing with a scraped passage, rather than your actual building bills. This is the mandatory unit-cost calculation; the actual-cost exceptions for connected extensions and manure facilities are described below. A newly built reindeer-herder cabin can instead receive a SEK 250,000 lump sum when it includes an insulated cabin, heat source, energy source and basic kitchen.
Eligibility
- You must run an agricultural, horticultural (including aquaponics) or reindeer enterprise and invest in land or buildings used for agricultural activity. Horse breeding and rearing are excluded. Eligible expenditure must reach SEK 200,000, or SEK 100,000 for drainage, energy woodland or reindeer investments.
- New technology for innovative sustainable production must have been on the Swedish market for no more than two years. Eligible expenditure includes buildings, installations, fixed fittings, materials, purchased services and intangible investments.
- Both invoice and payment dates must be on or after the authority received your application. Replacement investments, leasing, your own materials or labour, employees’ wages, private housing, machinery sheds, straw stores, farm workshops and conventional field machinery are excluded. Work already legally required at application is also excluded.
- For mandatory livestock-building unit costs, the investment must include groundworks, a new-material building, installations, new fixed fittings and design. Eligible places cover dairy cows; calves aged 0–3 months except slatted pens or deep litter with a scraped passage; suckler cows and young cattle in cubicles; non-organic finishing pigs, sow production and broilers; and cattle deep-litter housing with a scraped passage. Apply for county pre-approval of the animal places and use the official calculator. The building must be separate, without an open connection to another building other than electricity or water pipes: an extension with such a connection uses actual costs instead. No own labour, employees, own materials or used materials/equipment are allowed under unit costs. Manure facilities may be claimed at actual cost in the same investment. At the first payment claim, show that construction did not start before the support application; submit the earliest excavation or groundworks invoice when there are several.
- Outside that unit-cost restriction, used equipment needs certification that its previous purchase received no support, it has the required technical characteristics, and its price is no more than market value and below equivalent new equipment. Instalment purchases require the agreement, credit institution’s purchase invoices, proof of your first instalment and evidence that the asset belongs to your business.
- Keep the investment and its intended use for at least five years after final payment, including after an ownership change. Follow the EU publicity requirements in your decision. If an information sign is required, you must display and pay for it; failing to do so reduces payment by 2%.

Check your county administrative board’s or Sametinget’s application arrangements and minimum score. Applications may be processed continuously, in decision rounds or through calls; regional priorities differ. Uppsala’s energy-woodland route, for example, processes applications continuously and has a 300-point minimum. Funding is competitive and not guaranteed.
Apply through Jordbruksverket’s project, investment and business-support e-service, explaining the work, costs, goals and results. Attach the selection template for ammonia reduction or drainage if applicable; otherwise use the financial-ratios template. A representative may need a power of attorney.
Starting after application but before a decision is at your own risk. If refused after starting, you cannot reapply for those costs. If you have not started, you may submit a new application, but only expenditure after that new application can qualify. Keep actual-cost investment accounts separate, follow applicable procurement duties and obtain approval for material changes, including an extended completion date.
After approval, apply separately for payment in the same e-service. Normally pay the costs first and retain invoices and payment evidence; cash payments above SEK 1,000 are not accepted. Advances can cover up to 50% of the grant, capped at SEK 250,000 and at the Swedish-funded share. State bodies, regions and municipalities cannot receive advances, nor can new-stable unit-cost grants.
Actual-cost investments can have several interim payments. A grant wholly based on livestock-building unit costs allows at most two: 10% after groundworks and foundations, then 45% after the frame, roof, exterior walls and floors are complete, or 55% at that second stage if no first payment was claimed. Mixed unit-cost and actual-cost investments can claim either or both in an interim application, but all work must be finished for the single final claim. The cabin lump sum has one payment after completion.
Finish and submit your final payment application by the date in your decision. Late submission reduces the payment by 1% per day; after more than 25 days, that final claim receives no payment.
