Household energy management grant
A grant for Austrian households installing automatic controls that coordinate solar generation, batteries, electric-car charging or heat and hot-water equipment with the electricity grid.
The grant pays 50% of eligible costs, including VAT, up to €600. It covers a new energy-management controller, one-off software purchases, measurement and communication equipment, installation, configuration and commissioning. Existing or newly acquired devices can be connected.
The controller must operate locally at your property, including carrying out commands without an internet connection. Additional cloud services are allowed, but a cloud-only controller and systems that only maximise consumption of your own surplus generation are excluded.
Buying the solar panels, batteries or other controlled equipment is excluded, as are ongoing subscriptions, unrelated equipment, standalone device controls and uninstalled materials. If equipment has an integrated controller, only separately invoiced additional energy-management costs can qualify. The same costs cannot receive other federal, provincial or municipal grants; subsidised solar or storage equipment can still be combined with separately invoiced, unsubsidised additional control costs.
If you volunteer for accompanying research and are selected, you receive an additional one-off €100. Selected participants provide quarter-hour readings and controller data and share their experience after one operating year.
Eligibility
You must be a private individual with a household connection on grid level 7: the low-voltage 230/400 V connection normally used by households. The system must control at least two of these categories: renewable electricity generation, electrical storage, electric-car charging, and a heat pump or electric hot-water heating with a hot-water tank. Only one application is allowed per person and per site. Systems spanning multiple households or metering points are excluded.
The linked glossary requires generation capacity below 250 kW. Where generation, storage or chargers capable of exporting electricity are combined, assess their total effect, rather than each device separately. Check the agreed maximum capacity, Pmax, in your grid-connection contract.
Your controller must automatically change device operation, process time-varying or dynamic electricity/network prices, measure grid imports and any exports, and manage devices so the specified import and export power limits are not exceeded. Measuring and displaying energy alone is insufficient.
A qualified firm normally installs the system and confirms its functions and connected devices. You may assist that firm. If you can prove you are authorised and qualified, for example as an electrician, you may install it yourself, but a qualified independent electrician must commission it. Your own installation labour is excluded; independent commissioning costs can qualify.
For five years from payment, operate the system under one of these arrangements, with its contract already started before you apply:
- A dynamic electricity export or supply contract with hourly or quarter-hour billing that reflects spot-market prices.
- A contract with a flexibility service that controls generation, storage or loads to provide grid services or relieve congestion.
- Flexible grid access with a contracted static or dynamic limit on the power affecting the grid, imposed by the grid operator or requested by you.
- A controllable network tariff that reduces network charges when you respect power limits at specified times. The household tariff is expected from 1 January 2027; the summer low tariff, SNAP, does not qualify.
- Dynamic electricity sharing in a local or regional energy community or nearby joint energy use. The controller must respond automatically to continually updated demand and surplus information, or be actively controlled by that community.
Give the contract start, partner and relevant product in your application and provide proof if requested. You may switch between options during the five years, but must inform the administrator.

- Round restrictions
- Registration closes at 12:00 on 15 April 2027, or earlier if funds run out. Submit the completed application within six months of registration.[^c11][^c12]
Register online through Kommunalkredit Public Consulting before any controller components or services are invoiced. Registration remains possible while funds last, no later than 15 April 2027 at 12:00. Before registering, arrange for installation, commissioning and invoicing to finish within six months.
Provide ID Austria or official photo identification, your contact details, project site, controlled equipment, the import metering-point number and, where applicable, the export metering-point number. Registration reserves funding and emails you an individual application link. The applicant and site cannot subsequently be changed.
After installation, commissioning and invoicing, submit the application through that link within six months of registration. Include your IBAN, chosen flexibility arrangement, costs, the settlement form signed by you and the installer, and invoices addressed to you. Missing the six-month deadline cancels the registration and reserved funds. KPC may request further documents by email. Payment follows assessment and approval by the Klima- und Energiefonds. Submit all partial invoices together with the final invoice. For lump-sum invoices, include an itemised cost breakdown.
