Heating grant for businesses – residential buildings (459)

• Eligible applicants include companies, sole traders, self-employed professionals, housing cooperatives, associations, nonprofits, churches and public-law bodies. Energy-service contractors investing in heating on their own account can apply too. If you do not own the building, its owner must also qualify, be informed of the funding and maximum amount before you apply, and confirm that they will keep the funded installation in its intended use, meet notification duties and transfer obligations to a buyer if ownership changes, and allow the required information checks and inspections.
• Private individuals registered as owners use product 458 instead; municipalities and municipal special-purpose associations use 422. Federal and state government bodies, federal-majority companies and political parties are excluded. State-majority companies and institutions qualify only where the funded work performs municipal tasks. You cannot apply if insolvency proceedings have been requested or opened against you, or if you have submitted, or are obliged to submit, a sworn financial statement under §807 of Germany's Code of Civil Procedure (ZPO) or compulsory disclosure of assets under §802c ZPO or §284 of the Fiscal Code (AO).
• The building application or notification must be at least five years old. After the work, the building must fall within Germany's Building Energy Act (GEG). The project must improve energy efficiency or the renewable share of energy use. The whole heating distribution system must be optimised, including balancing water flow to radiators or adjusting airflow as appropriate.
• Mixed-use buildings qualify where homes occupy more than 50% of the heated floor area. Costs serving non-residential space can count, but that space does not add dwellings to the cost ceiling.
• Self-built systems, prototypes with fewer than four units operated, used systems and systems with substantial second-hand components are excluded. Where a municipality has made and publicised a decision that the property is to connect to a heat network, only that connection is funded, not an individual heating system.
• You cannot combine this with BEG WG/NWG whole-building renovation funding; a three-year wait between these funding routes applies in either direction. Where other public funding is permitted, the combined ceiling is 60% of the costs receiving support. Do not apply to both KfW and BAFA for the same costs, or claim tax relief under sections 35a/35c EStG for the same work. Waiving an award triggers a six-month wait before reapplying for the same project.

• Apply before starting the project. Funding depends on available budget; there is no entitlement.

1. Appoint an energy-efficiency expert listed for BEG residential buildings or a specialist heating contractor. They prepare the Bestätigung zum Antrag (BzA): the confirmation of your planned system, eligible costs and compliance with technical requirements.
2. Sign a supply or service contract that is conditional on KfW funding approval from the outset, with a planned implementation date inside the approval period. You cannot add that condition afterwards. Apply before starting on-site work; an unconditional contract signed before application also disqualifies the project.
3. The same authorised representative must register the organisation and apply in “Meine KfW”. Select product 459, enter the BzA ID and upload the contract. After approval, carry out the work within 36 months.

For a heat pump, after commissioning you must request a smart electricity metering system including control equipment from the default or a competing metering operator—the company responsible for installing and operating electricity meters. This equipment enables the heat pump to connect to smart metering and grid-oriented control. The request is not needed if the building connection already has an intelligent metering system. Obtain confirmation that the operator received your request; this is required evidence. 4. Have the expert or contractor prepare the Bestätigung nach Durchführung (BnD), confirming proper completion. In “Meine KfW”, verify your identity and submit its ID, proof of authority and invoices paid without cash. For rented, leased or contracted equipment, submit the contract and evidence of at least one non-cash payment instead. Submit evidence within six months of the final invoice and no later than six months after the 36-month approval period ends. KfW pays after a successful check. Keep the required technical records, invoices and payment evidence for ten years from approval, and promptly report changes to or cessation of the heating's intended use.
