Workplace Charging Scheme for state-funded education institutions
A grant covering 75% of electric-vehicle chargepoint purchase and installation costs, up to £2,000 per socket, for UK state-funded schools and education institutions.

Your installer claims the grant and deducts it from your invoice; your institution pays the remaining cost. Support is limited to 40 sockets across all your sites, counting previous Workplace Charging Scheme applications. You can make several claims within that allocation. Academy trusts can apply for up to 40 sockets for each institution in the trust.
The £2,000 socket cap applies to applications from 1 April 2026. Vouchers for applications submitted before that date retain a cap of £2,500 per socket.
Eligibility
- Your school or other education institution must be state-funded and in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Institutions in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man are excluded. Independent schools use the separate general Workplace Charging Scheme.
- You must have an existing or future need for electric-vehicle charging and designated off-street parking clearly associated with your premises. Parking may serve staff, visitors, customers, guests or others. The number of chargepoints must not exceed your reasonable needs or the scheme limits.
- Use an authorised installer and eligible commercial chargepoints. Charging infrastructure already funded by any grant, replacement of existing grant-funded infrastructure, and installations required by building regulations are excluded.
- If you open the chargepoints to the public and charge for use, you must comply with the Public Chargepoint Regulations 2023 and associated guidance.
- You must cooperate with audits, including providing records and access to the installation. Failure to do so can lead to the grant being withheld or reclaimed.
- Authorised installers and businesses in which they or their directors have an interest cannot apply. Installer directors or employees can only use an installation business in which they have no interest or involvement.

Get an authorised installer to survey your site and check that its electrical capacity can support the sockets you want. Then use ‘Start now’ on the official education grant guidance page. You must have authority to apply for your institution and complete and submit the form yourself; the installer cannot do it for you.
Provide staff and pupil numbers, your institution reference number (SEED number in Scotland), the number of chargepoints and sites, plans for public use, and your installer's registered name and number. Supply two contacts with institution-domain email addresses. Academy trusts need a contact at the trust and one at the institution concerned.
Do not install before applying and being notified that you are eligible. Successful applicants receive a voucher code, normally within five working days; funding is not guaranteed until you receive it. Give the code to your installer and complete installation within its 180-day validity.
