Residential heat-pump rebate
A rebate for Belmont Light residential customers installing qualifying air-source heat pumps in existing homes.
Deze mogelijkheid is momenteel in het Engels beschikbaar.
Install a ducted system or ductless mini-splits to heat and cool part or all of an existing home. The standard rebate is $1,000 per ton of eligible outdoor-unit cooling capacity, up to $5,000 per account. A ton is 12,000 BTU per hour of cooling capacity at 95°F; the calculation uses the capacity recorded on the system’s AHRI certificate. The rebate is paid by cheque.
This entry covers the standard existing-home rebate. Additional incentives are available for qualifying low-income customers, weatherization and removal of fossil-fuel heating; consult the official programme details for those options.
Eligibility
- The property must have an active Belmont Light residential electric account for at least three months, in good standing. The equipment must be installed at that account’s address, and you must allow Belmont Light to inspect it. Commercial accounts do not qualify.
- You can apply as a resident who has been the named customer on that account for at least three months. Alternatively, you can apply as the property owner if you meet the other eligibility requirements and prove ownership and that you paid for the product or installation. Owners must provide that proof at the beginning of the application; tax documents or a water bill can establish ownership.
- This entry covers existing buildings with one to four residential units. Equipment included in a home purchase does not qualify.
- Choose outdoor units that are ENERGY STAR 6.1 Cold Climate Certified and on the Heat Pump Qualified Product List or the NEEP Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump list. Check the proposed system’s certification and list entry with your installer before buying it. Units using R410A refrigerant are ineligible from 1 January 2026.
- Complete a Home Energy Assessment through Energy New England or Mass Save before installation, no more than three years before the heat-pump installation. The assessment identifies energy-saving improvements for your home. Natural-gas heating customers can also apply for this rebate.
- Your installer must work with a Massachusetts-licensed electrician. Place the outdoor condenser on a stand with at least 12 inches of clearance below its base, unless it is adequately shielded from snowfall above and on both sides.
- For single- and two-family dwellings in General Residence zoning districts, outdoor equipment must be outside the front yard and required side and rear setbacks, and hidden from the street and adjacent properties. The front yard extends from the front of the dwelling across the lot to the front property boundary.
- Buy and install the equipment in the current calendar year. Only one rebate claim per residential account is allowed each year; include multiple systems in that single application.

Arrange the Home Energy Assessment before installation, then choose certified and listed equipment with your installer. After installation, the homeowner or contractor completes the online rebate application administered by Energy New England. Submit within 180 days of purchase and six months of installation, satisfying both deadlines.
Provide your utility account details, an itemized paid installer invoice, the system’s AHRI certificate or certificates, the Home Energy Assessment report and two photos of each outdoor unit: one showing the unit and one close-up showing its model number. The invoice and AHRI certificates are available from the contractor. Your claim must accurately identify the paying customer and installation address.
Online applications are currently accepted. Funding is limited and the offer can end at any time.
