Project funding

German Federal Environmental FoundationGermany

Grants for organisations developing innovative, practical environmental solutions, with particular attention to small and medium-sized enterprises.

DBU funds environmental technology, applied research, communication and conservation projects. Climate-relevant topics include renewable energy and efficiency, climate- and resource-friendly construction, resource-efficient production, recycling, water protection, agriculture and food.

Awards are individually assessed and are often between €100,000 and €400,000. Companies, associations, foundations and similar applicants are generally funded for 50% of project costs; different rules can apply to universities and state-funded academic institutions.

Eligibility

Legal entities such as small and medium-sized companies, associations, municipalities, research institutions and universities normally qualify. The project needs an innovative solution, practical relevance, a relevant environmental benefit and potential to serve as a model for others.

DBU does not normally fund projects already started, pure investment, basic research, market launch, statutory duties or studies without a route to implementation. German projects are the main focus; international projects are possible, particularly in Central and South-Eastern Europe.
